Nakamaru was an island.
A calm and quiet one, with lots of white sand and some palm trees next to the beach. The water around the island was turquoise and clear, hardly any waves disturbing it. It was perfect.
Just that recently this island got invaded. Wind blowing through the normally so calm water and making it go mad.
Nakamaru didn’t like that. He hated it when the calmness of the island got disturbed. This was not how it was supposed to be.
“Let’s eat together, alright?” Kame sat down next to Nakamaru on the bench, obviously feeling relaxed.
“Well…” Nakamaru sighed, saying good-bye to the quiet moment he just had on his inner Nakamaru-Island and forced a smile to his lips. “Sure.” When Kame kept chatting along, he had to shake his head a bit. Did Kame ever get tired? Did he never want to be alone?
But apparently Kame was enjoying it to have company. Kamenashi-Island was a frequently visited one, with lots of Hawaii-parties, sport events and tequila. Kamenashi-Island was just always crowded, always bubbly, full of rainbows and water sports and beach parties.
A little bit exhausting occasionally.
“What happened?” Koki blinked in confusion when he peeked into the lounge, finding Nakamaru there, with Kame leaning against him, obviously asleep.
“Well, I think Kame got tired…” Nakamaru mused.
Koki chuckled a bit. “His sleeping face really is cute, right?
Nakamaru blinked. “Yes, I guess. It’s okay.”
“Okay?” Koki pulled his eyebrows up. “Nothing about Kame is only ‘okay’. It’s always more than okay.”
Koki was talking in his matter-of-fact voice and Nakamaru knew better than to argue. He merely rolled his eyes. “Whatever you say…”
“Don’t you think the same?” Koki insisted, pointing at Kame. “Doesn’t he look adorable at the moment?”
Nakamaru blinked a bit, his gaze shifting towards Kame’s sleeping figure, scanning his pretty face, his soft hair, his slender hips. He blushed a bit when he realized for how long he had been staring. “Of course you are right,” he agreed, trying to sound as casual as possible. “Kame is good-looking. We know that.”
Koki chuckled. “I was just making sure…”
There was no doubt to it that Kame really was pretty. Nakamaru knew that himself, but still… his hours at Nakamaru-Island were precious. He didn’t want to think of another person then or wonder about how pretty Kame was or how his head was leaning against his shoulder now. It was his own private space, Nakamaru-Island. And he wasn’t ready to open the gates, even when it was for beautiful and good-looking visitors.
******
It’s been midnight. Almost. But the ringing on his door made Nakamaru jump up in shock and surprise. A not too pleasant surprise by the way.
He almost dropped out of the door again when he saw who was visiting him at such a late hour. Actually he had been about to go to bed and get some proper sleep, but…
“KAME!?”
“Sorry,” Kame smiled warmly. “Is it too late? I was around this area and thought: Why not visiting Maru?”
Nakamaru shifted around, but eye to eye with such a sweet and happy Kame it was impossible to decline this visit. “No, it’s okay…”
“You were about to go to sleep, right?” Kame asked out of a sudden when he realized that Nakamaru was wearing his pyjamas. He shifted around nervously, feeling embarrassed.
Nakamaru wanted to nod his head, but when he looked into Kame’s warm and nervous eyes, he just couldn’t. “No, I just put my pyjamas on earlier. Watching some movies, you know?” he lied.
“Is that so?” Kame asked in relief, then he chuckled. “So, it’s like a pyjama party?”
“Well,” Nakamaru mused. “Yes, I guess.”
"Alright then, let’s watch some movies and get drunk.” Kame suggested hopefully.
Maru had to smile a bit at that. “Okay.”
The evening was fun, surprisingly fun. And though Nakamaru hadn’t been too happy about this at the beginning, he couldn’t help but enjoy Kame’s presence. They had spent hours watching cheesy old Hollywood movies and drunk lots of Martini.
Nakamaru chuckled a bit, when he saw how Kame had fallen asleep on his sofa, curled up against one of the pillows, his beautiful face soft and peaceful now.
Beautiful face…
His pretty features…
His beautiful, now-closed eyes…
His lips…
Oh, such beautiful lips…
Nakamaru was like in trance when he bent forward and kissed Kame’s luscious lips softly. So sweet, Kame’s lips were sweet. Nakamaru smiled a bit, before it suddenly hit him what he had done. He had kissed Kame!! DAMN!
******
“Hey Maru,” Koki smiled brightly, throwing his arm around his friend’s shoulders.
Nakamaru tensed up at that, for a moment he had thought that it was Kame, the more he was relieved that it was only Koki. He sighed in relief. “It’s you…”
“Wow,” Koki blinked. “Aren’t we nervous?”
“Sorry,” Nakamaru stuttered. “I think I had one or two drinks too much yesterday.”
“I see,” Koki grinned, turning around a bit. “Such a coincidence that our dear Kazuya also had one or two drinks too much…”
“What?” Kame pulled an eyebrow up. “Jealous, Koki?” He chuckled a bit, jumping at Nakamaru’s side and wrapping his arms around him. “Right, Maru?”
“Stop it!” Nakamaru hissed out of a sudden, making Kame draw back in shock and Koki blink in surprise. “I,” Nakamaru winced a bit by the hurt expression in Kame’s eyes. “Sorry…I guess I’m being hangoverish. It’s just…”
“Just what?” Kame asked piercingly.
“I’m not exactly,” Nakamaru sighed. “I’m not really clingy. It’s making me feel uncomfortable if you guys hug me or are invade my private space too much.” He shifted around a bit, trying to sound casual and not too earnest… and avoiding it to look at the expression Kame was showing him at the moment. He could imagine that the younger one’s mind was working on its own now, going back to the last weeks and how he had always searched for Nakamaru’s presence… till yesterday night where he had suddenly ringed at his door.
Kame swallowed down the dry feeling in his throat. This was even worse than getting dumped, wasn’t it? He forced a smile to his lips. “Okay,”we understand," he told Nakamaru.
“Really,” Koki rolled his eyes, putting an arm around Kame’s shoulder instead, not realizing that there was more going on between these two than only Nakamaru telling them that he wasn’t the touchy type. “You should have told us earlier.”
“Yes,” Kame mumbled sadly. “I wished I would have known…”
Nakamaru would have to lie if he said that Kame’s sad eyes and his broken voice didn’t affect him. Was he really that hurt by being pushed away? Why? He had seen similar scenes between Kame and Jin years ago already. And it had never affected Kame that much… he had only argued back and got into a little fight in Jin.
But he never showed him these sad eyes.
Apparently Koki was thinking something similar, because he suddenly wrapped his arms around Kame, messing around with him. “You are so cute,” he chuckled. “I’m going to eat you up if you look like that…”
Kame blinked at that, blushing slightly. “I’m not something to eat, Koki!”
“Yes you are,” the other teased. “You are a perfect chocolate cookie…with vanilla cream.”
“PERV!” Kame blurt out, not able to hold back a giggle.
“I’m just having fun,” Koki grinned, tugging Kame along when he was leaving the dressing room. “I’m going to treat you for coffee.”
Nakamaru blinked at that scene, something inside him tugging and pulling at him almost painfully. Why? Why did he even care? Right, Koki was having fun with Kame now… so what?
Nakamaru soon learned that Kame kept his promise. He didn’t get on Nakamaru’s nerves or invade his privacy. He was still nice and friendly towards him, but nothing more. But to Nakamaru’s shock Kame suddenly started to be clingy towards Koki, rather spending his time with him now than with Nakamaru.
But this was what he had wanted, wasn’t it? Why did it bother him now…?
“Moody,” Junno complained.
“Sorry?” Nakamaru blinked in surprise. “What?”
“You are being moody.”
“I’m not moody!”
“Horribly moody,” Junno argued. “Since days already. Really… and you are letting it out on everyone else.”
“I’m not!” Nakamaru huffed.
“No?” Junno pulled an eyebrow up. “So you are just like always?”
“YES!”
“Oh man,” Junno grumbled. “You are doing it again.”
Nakamaru blinked at that. “Doing what?”
“Taking your mood out on me.” Junno told him. “It’s always me. Because Ueda is too absent-minded to realize it and Koki and Kame keep hanging out with each other all the time. Leaves only me…”
When Nakamaru heard Koki’s and Kame’s names he flinched, not able to hide his reaction, because Junno's words came too sudden for him. And though Junno tended to doze off occasionally, he was fully concentrated right now. Of course he was, much to Nakmaru’s annoyance. For a moment Junno blinked in confusion, scanning Nakamaru piercingly. “No really,” he insisted. “What is wrong!? Tell me!” He frowned. “Is it Koki? Or Kame?” When Nakamaru was obviously wincing, Junno tilted his head. “You are jealous, aren’t you?”
“I’m not!” Nakamaru tried to defend himself. “I just can’t stand any lovey-dovey behaviour.” He bit his lips at that, trying to hide his disappointment. He had thought that Kame liked him, that he had romantic interests towards him, but either it had just been some fun for Kame, so that he was now having fun with Koki, or he was moving away… away from Nakamaru, to someone who was treating him way better than he did. Someone like Koki…
“Of course,” Junno sneered. “That’s why you were all lovey-dovey with Kame for weeks, because you hate lovey-dovey behaviour.”
“I wasn’t lovey-dovey with Kame.”
“Of course you were,” Junno giggled. “We were already expecting things to happen between you.”
“Eh?” Nakamaru blinked. “Why?”
“Because,” a smile curled up around Junno’s lips. “You like to have your privacy, but with Kame it was different. You shared everything with him and you never got annoyed. You even encouraged him to be with you all the time. And you got quite jealous when he was talking to me or Ueda or Koki. Your eyes were always lightening up when you were talking to him. And just admit it… when he wasn’t around, you kept looking for him, right?”
“I,” Nakamaru was at a loss of words. “Are you for real? Was I really like that?”
“Totally,” Junno nodded his head. “Tatchan and I actually wondered how long it would take you to get together,” He shrugged. “But apparently you weren’t in love for real… such a pity.”
******
This naughty tugging in his stomach and Junno’s words from before were almost making Nakamaru go insane. He tossed around in his bed, trying to fall asleep while he couldn’t help but think about Junno’s words over and over again. What the hell was happening here?
“Damn," he cursed, jumping out of his bed and putting on some clothes. He couldn’t sleep anyway, so why not going for a walk.
He hadn’t even realized it how he was suddenly walking through a very familiar area. And most likely he wouldn’t have realized it at all, if he hadn’t met a very specific curley-haired guy, coincidentally, leaving a little shop with a bento box in his hands.
“Late dinner?”
Kame blinked when he heard the familiar voice behind him. He smiled warily. “Couldn’t sleep.”
“Me neither.”
Kame chuckled a bit at Nakamaru’s pout. “Want to have something to eat? At my place?”
Nakamaru blinked a bit. “Well…”
“I have some left-overs from yesterday.”
“Yesterday?” Nakamaru asked curiously.
“Yes, Koki dropped by spontaneously and we made some gyoza,” Kame explained randomly, a happy smile on his lips.
Nakamaru frowned out of a sudden, his stomach tugging painfully. The same feeling he was having since one week. “Well then,” he answered bitingly. “I see that you are having fun enough without me! It’s good to know how important I was to you,” he huffed, turning around to walk away from Kame, but to his own annoyance he could feel Kame’s angry glance, following him, even when he was already far away.
******
“You are jealous,” Junno analysed heartlessly.
“I’m not!”
“TOTALLY JEALOUS, Maru!” Junno hissed, sounding pretty worked up already. Kinda unusual for Junno. “Could you stop being in denial please? It’s pretty annoying already! You were the one pushing Kame away and telling him you hate his clingy attitude. And? Of course he pulled away… Koki was just trying to cheer him up all the time.”
“Eh?”
“Yes, from what I know Kazu was pretty crushed and Koki didn’t want him to be in this gloomy state all the time. That’s why he is all around him,” Junno frowned. “After our talk yesterday I asked him about it. And that’s exactly what he told me.”
“But,” Nakamaru blushed a bit, rubbing over his head. “Why am I jealous?” he asked finally.
Junno grinned a bit. “Everyone is jealous when being in love. Have you never fallen in love with someone?”
“No,” Nakamaru answered shyly. “I haven’t. I don’t know that feeling.”
“For real?” Junno sighed a bit, shaking his head. “You like Kame,” he explained softly. “Do you enjoy his presence? Do you feel mad when someone else is clinging to him? Are you okay when he drops by at midnight at your place, though you like it to go to bed early? Do you like to eat the things he likes just because he will be happy then? Are you trying new things just because it makes you happy to share something with him?”
Nakamaru looked at Junno in shock, then he rubbed over his head sheepishly. “I messed it up, right?”
“Well,” Junno wavered for a moment. “It’s not too late…”
“It is.”
“NO!” Junno sighed in desperation. “Honestly, I hope not every love-problem you have, will be that annoying for me.”
“I was confused,” Nakamaru admitted. “He confused me. And then I kissed him…”
“WAIT!” Junno breathed out. “What!?”
“He fell asleep on my sofa and I couldn’t help it… I kissed him.”
Junno blinked at that statement, then he laughed out of a sudden, padding Nakamaru’s shoulder. “You got it pretty bad, right?” He grinned. “Visit him. Then you can make up…”
“No!” Nakamaru blushed. “How should I talk to him after everything that happened? He for sure is hurt… and it’s my fault.”
“Oh come one.” Junno smiled. “He is grown-up now. Not a kid anymore. He won’t slam his door in your face.”
******
Nakamaru sighed silently when Kame slammed the door right in his face. Yes, Junno, so much about being totally grown-up…not that Nakamaru could blame Kame though.
“Listen…”
“No,” Kame hissed, opening the door again. “What are you thinking? That you can treat me like some piece of shit and then knock at my door again.”
“No,” Nakamaru said silently. “I’m sorry. I was so confused…”
Kame sighed in frustration, but against his intention he got interested in what Nakamaru had to say. “Why?”
“I’m always confused when you are around," Nakamaru stuttered, blushing deeply. But since it was not possible to do any more damage to their relationship, he could as well be honest. “You are so pretty and so adorable, I’m always confused when you are around,” he repeated.
“Eh?” Kame blinked, a slight blush on his cheeks. He felt angry that he reacted like that.
“Yes,” Nakamaru rubbed over his head nervously, bowing a bit to apologize to Kame. “I had no control at all anymore. So stupid.” He paused, shifting around now. “I kissed you,” he admitted silently. “When you stayed over at my place and fell asleep on the sofa.”
“I know,” Kame told him bluntly.
“EH!?”
“I know you kissed me,” Kame sighed in frustration. “Really Maru… you are making it very difficult for me.”
“I know, I’m sorry, but it’s the first time for me to encounter something like that,” Nakamaru tried to explain. He looked at Kame nervously. “Just one chance. I will show you how good I can be for you. I know it’s a lot to ask after everything that happened. Just one chance.”
Kame stayed quiet for a moment, then he sighed deeply. Instead of an answer, he opened the door a bit more, stepping aside to let Nakamaru into his apartment. “Ran-chan and I like it to be treated for dinner," he demanded.
Nakamaru chuckled. “Dinner it is…”
"We like flowers. Roses."
"Of course. Flowers are beautiful."
“And we like amusement parks.”
“That’s also fine for me. I like them too.”
“But,” Kame blinked. “You hate roller-coasters.”
Nakamaru chuckled. “Not if I’m going there with you.”
“Oh dear,” Kame grinned out of a sudden. “You are getting cheesy already.”
“Not good?” Nakamaru asked nervously, wondering if it was okay to be that lovey-dovey and honest.
Kame smiled a bit. “Yes, not good.” He took Nakamaru’s hand into his, his thumb stroking over the other’s palm. “But better.”
