You totally got it right: Actually this here was like a journey. Ryo was a closed, introverted character who didn't trust anyone, besides Yoko. But now he learned how to come out of his shell and actually change something by himself, instead of waiting for someone to come to him. He went to Kame and talked to him, because he realized he is strong enough himself and has learned to help others and help them overcome their problems.
