Pairing: Aimiya, Juntoshi, Sho/Masami
Rating: PG-13 (for now?)
Genre: romance, AU (college/work/coffeeshop), love-hexagon you could say^^
Plot: Nino, Masaki’s best friend and co-student, has a crush on Masaki’s older brother Satoshi since forever. Satoshi however, a young barista, loves Masaki’s university lecturer Matsumoto, who is a regular in his coffeeshop. But Jun has a friends with benefits thing with his former senpai Sho. Sho however, a young lawyer, has never believed in love, until he falls in love with Masami, a young pet shop owner. Masami however laid her eyes on the cute guy Masaki, who helps in her shop sometimes. And Masaki? He can’t see Nino the same anymore ever since that night two years ago…
Note: Happy birthday to my dear

Jun looks at his phone, biting down on his lip in anxiety. Like he knows it’s happening, he knows it is, but he just can’t accept it. How often did Sho ditch him during the last weeks? He tried to set up a meeting with him, a date, to have sex, but Sho found an excuse everytime. Jun takes his coffee, filling his cup with a sigh.
Who is he kidding? Who the fuck is he kidding?
It’s so frustrating! Why does he need to like Sho out of all?
He types a swift answer to the message Sho sent him, with a decline of his invitation again.
Fine, Sho-san, you seem to be busy. I won’t bother you. Write me when you have time.
He packs his stuff, ready to leave his office at university and visit his sister in her pet shop when Sho’s answer comes. Are you angry, Jun-kun? I’m so sorry for not having any time!
Jun puts the phone away. He decides he is not one of the Good Samaritan and doesn’t need to answer the message just out of friendliness. Because, fuck, yes, he is pissed. He knows he and Sho just had a sex thing going, but he is so angry at everything. At himself for falling in love with Sho despite knowing that Sho will never return his feelings, at Sho for not realizing he likes him, at the whole situation that Sho doesn’t realize what’s off (surprise!) and that he himself doesn’t have the guts to be honest to him. He never was brave enough to confess his feelings, probably because he always knew that Sho liked him… but not enough.
Jun sighs, looking at the rainy sky. The weather is shit too.
Literally the worst day ever. Judging by his feeling – namely that Sho seems to be suddenly interested in someone else – he assumes it will get worse.
Jun takes the subway to his sister’s pet shelter. To his surprise he meets the two nice brothers there. Satoshi and Masaki. He doesn’t know what it is, but whenever he meets or sees them he feels slightly better, they seem to radiate certain calmness.
Satoshi smiles at him and it makes Jun feel better and less gloomy almost immediately. “Jun-san,” he says. “Are you visiting your sister?”
“Yes,” Jun answers, the tension slowly leaving his body when he follows the pair of brothers into his sister’s shop. “But I didn’t know you are frequently visiting her.”
Satoshi chuckles. “I’m not, actually. Just sometimes. Masaki comes regularly.”
“Yes, he really is a kind kid,” Jun states when he watches how Masaki immediately goes to work. “You have a good little brother.”
Satoshi looks proud. “He is the best.”
“And I have the best sister,” Jun says with a grin.
Satoshi chuckles. “Obviously!”
“Sa-chan,” Masaki’s voice comes from the back of the shop. “Can we start now?”
Jun looks at Satoshi in interest. “Start with what?”
“I promised Masaki and Masami-san that I would help them to colour the wall right behind the counter.” He smiles. “I did that for my shop too.”
“Right, you two are artists!” Jun nods. It makes sense.
Masaki peeks into the room, blushing. “I’m not an artist.”
“But yet you do interesting comics,” Jun states. “For me that’s a form of art.”
“It’s nothing,” Masaki stutters. “Satoshi makes real art.”
Jun and Satoshi exchange a glance. “Why are you down-talking your own talents?” Jun wants to know. “There is not only one form of art.”
“You think so?” Masaki stutters. “But it feels so clumsy… And Satoshi’s pictures look so good!”
Satoshi chuckles. “I’m just doing a different kind of art,” he states. “You do you. You have the talent. If you practise you will get better.”
“You two really think that?” Masaki asks carefully.
Jun sighs. “You need more confidence, Masaki-kun. I personally think your talents are promising. Don’t hide them.”
Masaki blushes happily, and nods. “Oh!” He looks around. “Do you want to help us, sens-, I mean, Jun-san?”
Jun wonders… does he? It’s not really his thing. When his sister’s phone rings, she picks it up in surprise, a careful smile on her face. “Sho-san,” she says, nodding towards them while she points at the phone. Then she leaves for a quieter place.
“Yeah,” Jun mumbles. “I think painting is exactly what I want to do now.”
“Really?” Satoshi asks in surprise, looking at him for a while. He has a pair of deep eyes, the colour of them is light brown, not like Sho’s dark eyes. It’s almost like he looks into water, Jun thinks, the surface of water. It’s calming, so calming. But they look so knowingly and seem to look directly into his soul.
Jun nods sadly. “Yes, please let me help.”
~~~
Masaki chuckles when Nino almost drops out of the door again when he sees three of them – namely Satoshi, Jun – however that happened – and himself basically covered in rainbow colours, painting the wall.
“How did this happen?” Nino whispers in disbelief towards Masaki.
Masaki chuckles. Exactly his thoughts. “Don’t ask me. I’m still trying to understand it.” He hands Nino a brush. “Wanna help?”
“Yeah,” Nino agrees much to Masaki’s surprise. It’s not like Nino is the activity type of person. Maybe it’s because Satoshi is there, and he wants to spend time with him. To his surprise though Nino doesn’t settle next to Satoshi for painting but next to Masaki. “How come,” Nino asks after a while. “That Sensei is here?”
“Oh, Jun-san?” Masaki blinks. “He wanted to visit his sister, I think.”
Nino stares at him in sincere shock. “Jun-san?”
“Oh,” Masaki blushes. “He told me to call him like that in private, because I’m friends with his sister you know? And he also is a friend of my brother.” He grins while he splutters yellow colour on the wall, he wants to paint a sunset. “He said I should be more confident about my painting.”
“Really?” Nino grumbles. “I am also always saying that, you know?”
Masaki blinks at this weird reaction. “I know,” he stutters, uncertain how to react. “It means a lot to me that you have faith in my artworks.”
Nino still looks weirdly moody while he paints a bunch of tiny sheep on the wall. “Are you angry?” Masaki asks after a while.
Nino sighs. “No,” he mumbles. “But my mood is off recently. I don’t get it.”
“You can always talk to me, you know?” Masaki offers in worry.
“Yeah,” Nino answers, but it sounds weirdly off, and almost sad.
~~~
“Little-brother-chan,” Masami chirps while she points at Satoshi. “This man is a genius.”
Jun chuckles while Satoshi blushes. “I told you his cakes are the best.”
“It’s not just the cakes,” she squeals. “It’s everything! The coffee, the hot chocolate, the names he put on the cakes and sweets, the macarons. You-“ She points at Satoshi. “Deserve an award! How do you come up with these names and creations?”
Satoshi smiles carefully. “You know,” he explains. “Some things just come naturally. As a pastry shop you need to offer certain things. As for some specific creations… I think of events that touched my heart, good memories.” He pauses. “Certain people,” he adds.
Jun listens in awe. “So, you do your pastries like you do your art?”
“That’s it!” Masami agrees. “Exactly. It’s art!”
Satoshi blushes slightly. “You two are over-exaggerating!”
Jun’s mobile signals him an incoming message. To his utmost surprise it’s Sho. He hasn’t expected a message from him anytime soon. Hey Jun-kun, you okay? You know, I’m celebrating the end of the year – workwise. We finished some important projects. Wanna join my little gathering? Some co-workers are coming.
Jun’s throat feels dry. Sho wants him to come?
His joy gets shattered by the next incoming message. You can bring Masami-san along too, if you want. I’m inviting the both of you.
New message. I’ll be sending her an extra invitation later.
And another one. Since my cousin and his best friend are coming too, maybe you want to bring someone along too?
“Something interesting?” Masami asks while he keeps staring at his phone.
Jun swallows down the knot in his throat. “It’s just Sho-san,” he explains, trying to sound as casual as possible.
“Oh!” Masami looks at him in interest. “And?”
“He is inviting the both of us to his end-year-work party.” Jun smiles – hopefully – convincingly. “He told me I could bring someone along, because his young cousin is there too. Guess he wants to have a few more casual people around, so it won’t get weird. I just don’t know who I should ask…”
“Oh,” Masami exclaims. “How about Mr. Cake?”
Satoshi blinks. “Am I Mr. Cake?”
Jun looks at him. Actually, that’s not a bad idea, he thinks. Satoshi is Masaki’s brother after all – and Masaki will be there because of Nino. Besides it’s just so calming for his strained nerves to have him around. “It’s a good idea. Do you want to join, Satoshi-san?”
Satoshi looks at him warmly and nods. “Yes, I’ll join you.” He doesn’t say anything more, but Jun is relieved for not having to go to this party alone, he dreads it already.
To his surprise Satoshi brings him a freshly baked croissant ten minutes later. “I changed the recipe. Would you try it?” He pauses, opening his mouth like he wants to say something. “I…” he shakes his head. “It’s on the house.”
When Jun bites into the fresh croissant it feels like he is at home, with his mother, who he can share all his worries with.
He feels like crying.
~~~
Masaki takes a shaky breath. And another one. It’s the 250th supposedly now-lets-do-it breath he takes. And yet, he doesn’t dare to go into the building. He has his sketchbook in his hands, his lucky trousers on and the charm he once got from his brother. He is clearly on the safe side, but he just doesn’t dare to go inside.
Why is he such a chicken!?
He sighs deeply, grabbing his phone and calling the only person he knows will be able to set his strained nerves at ease. Before the other has even greeted him, he blurts a: “Please come, I need your help!” into the phone, and swiftly adds the address, then he hangs up.
Nino is there twenty minutes later. “What the heck happened!?” he calls out, running towards Masaki, who is even more of a bundle of nerves than before.
“I can’t do it,” Masaki says in panic. “I’m not good enough, they will laugh at me. What was I thinking by coming here? I… let’s just go!”
Nino looks at him in surprise before scanning the area, his eyes halting when he sees the sign on the huge building they are waiting at. “You want to do an internship there?” he asks. “At that manga publishing company?”
Masaki nods nervously. “But I know it’s hopeless. They will think I’m nuts.”
“Did you bring your three letters of recommendation?” Nino ignores his rambling.
Masaki nods.
“Who wrote you one?”
“Matsumoto-sensei, Katori-sensei and Nagayama-san from the art department.”
“These are all good names,” Nino says firmly. “CV?”
“Yes.”
“Did you mention your work at the animal shelter?”
“Yeah, Masami-san even wrote me a confirmation.”
“Good, motivational paper?” Nino continues. “ID card and your confirmation that you are student at our university?”
Again Masaki nods.
“Awesome, now go inside!” Nino orders, grabbing Masaki’s arm and pulling him towards the building.
“But, didn’t you listen?” Masaki stutters. “I’m obviously nuts.”
“You are only nuts if you won’t give this a try,” Nino argues. “You prepared everything and you are ready to give it a shot. You are not asking for a job, but for an internship. Katori and Matsumoto basically opened a part of the door for you, you only need to kick it open. You are talented. The only thing stopping you is your confidence.”
“You think I can do it?” Masaki mumbles.
“Of course!”
“And if they won’t take me?”
“So what?” Nino shrugs. “Then you know you at least tried it, and we’ll go to another publishing company.”
Masaki lets his words sink in. Having Nino around works miracles on him. “No one can do that,” he admits with a smile.
“Do what?” Nino asks.
“Be you,” Masaki says, squeezing Nino’s hands. “Only you can work me out of a panic attack.”
To his surprise Nino blushes slightly, and Masaki has to fight every ounce of his body not to hug him. He doesn’t want to ruin their friendship by showing his feelings too much.
Nino looks weirdly happy though when he squeezes his hands in return. “Now go in there and show them how cool you are!”
Masaki nods firmly, hurrying towards the building before he turns around one last time. “See you in a few minutes,” he calls towards Nino. “You’ll be waiting?”
Nino smiles warmly. “Of course. Now go!”
Oh Nino....open your eyes, you already fall for Masaki. It's sooooo sweet how he manages it to calm Aiba down in a second. 💛💚 And poor Aiba. He wants to be close to Nino, but is afraid of showing too much feelings, because he thinks Nino isn't interested... 😵😩
Date: 2018-01-13 03:18 pm (UTC)I feel for poor Jun. It's painful to be in unrequited love with Sho and it's more painful that Sho is now much more interested in his own sister. But at least Satoshi, unknowingly will be there for him. It's good that Jun is inviting him together to the party. I wonder what might happen there to kick start Jun-Satoshi moment?
Date: 2018-01-14 09:10 pm (UTC)And I feel sad for Jun, not just because of the whole Sho-thing but also because people feel intimidated by him, when he is just trying to be professional. Hope that Satoshi is able to dig out his carefree self.
Well, anyhow I am still curious.
