One-shot/Drabble
Genre: romance, slice-of-life
Summary: Up to know Ryo has believed that he and Subaru will always walk their path together. But they won't.
Notes: I wrote this after the announcement of Subaru leaving Kanjani8. Don't worry, it's nothing really angsty. And yes, it's a YokoRyo story. Since yuki is a fan of that pairing and hasn't read anything YokoRyo related in ages, I'll dedicate this to
yukitsubute . <3
“Is everything okay?”
Ryo looks up from the sheets of paper in front of him. He has his guitar on his knees and has scribbled down some notes, working on a new song, but his concentration is not with him at the moment.
Ryo shrugs. “Sure.”
“And honestly?”
Ryo pauses. “It’s not like something is wrong, Yoko, it’s just… it feels weird.”
“Because of Subaru?” Yoko wants to know.
Ryo shrugs again. “Yeah, I guess.”
Yoko sits down next to him now, taking one of the sheets of paper and studying it. “But you know he would leave.”
“I know, but now it’s real. Now we had a press conference, and gave our statements. And there is no going back now. It’s real.”
Yoko looks up in surprise. “You are right, he mumbles, his gaze softening when he touches Ryo’s arm. “Did you hope he would change his mind?”
“Yes, and no.” Ryo takes the offered hand, entwining their fingers. “I knew that’s what he wanted and that he made up his mind. So hoping was useless. You know-“ He puts his guitar aside. “It’s just that Baru and I were always together. He was with me from the beginning on. I just believed he would be there with me until the end. I know it’s naive.”
Yoko squeezes his hand, his expression helpless like he doesn’t know what to say. “You have me now,” he finally mumbles clumsily.
Ryo chuckles. “Yes, but Baru was there even before that, before we worked together as Kanjani, and before you and I got together.”
“But-“
“He was also there when things with Uchi…happened.” Ryo places a hand on his heart. “And when Uchi and I broke up, and when we didn’t talk to each other anymore. He was also there when you went through your phase in which you hated me and everything about me.”
“I never hated you!” Yoko protests fiercely.
“And when you realized you liked me, but wouldn’t deal with it and instead started picking on me,” Ryo continues, noticing with amusement how Yoko blushes in embarrassment. “He was also there when you confessed to me and I didn’t know how to react because I first thought it was just a joke.”
Yoko touches Ryo’s hair, the gesture feels weirdly familiar. He did that when they were still kids, and Ryo looked up to Yoko like he was an older brother. Before things went down between them, and there was distance between them, and arguments and unspoken feelings, and Ryo didn’t understand where all of this was coming from, why Yoko would hate on him every second. Until he asked Subaru if he knew what he did to Yoko, and then… things suddenly changed.
“I’ll be there from now on,” Yoko promises. “I’m not going anywhere.”
“Kimi-kun,” Ryo smiles softly. “That’s something else. You and I are different than Subaru and I.”
Yoko frowns. “Why?”
“For starters I don’t sleep with Baru.”
“Right,” Yoko grins. “We wouldn’t approve of that at all!”
“You know,” Ryo looks at Yoko insistently. “Don’t promise something you can’t keep.”
“I am not!”
Ryo feels content with that answer, and a bit better than before. He stands up. “I’ll make us dinner.”
Yoko grabs his hand before he can leave. “I’m sorry,” he blurts out. “I hurt you in the past. Back then Subaru told me I was an idiot.”
Ryo laughs. “Why are you apologizing now? Years too late, Yokoyama-senpai~”
“But I mean it.”
“It’s okay,” he chuckles. “So, what do you want to eat?”
Yoko doesn’t answer. “I won’t leave you,” he says instead. “It’s a promise.”
Ryo smiles while brushing through Yoko’s hair softly. “I’ll take you up on that.”
