Tomoya tilts his head. His body feels light and despite the freezing cold, his blood is warm. He is waiting patiently though, not moving, until he sees the long-awaited shadow appearing. There is a howling in the air and for a moment he isn’t sure if it’s the wind that’s rustling through the trees or the wolf that’s getting closer and closer to him. Once he can hear the tapping of its feet, he carefully jumps from the branch he is sitting on, spreading his wings and letting the wind carry him along.
The wolf is right behind him. It has white fur, almost silver in the moon light. And his movements are graceful, his feet only touching the ground lightly because he is running so fast, keeping up with Tomoya’s speed. He turns his head a little and for a moment, he meets the eyes of the beautiful creature beneath him. There is a glint in them, something warm and a little tired.
Tomoya-
Tomoya sends him a reassuring nod. We are almost back home, Tatsuya!
~~~
They arrive at the huge comfortable cottage in the mountains one hour later. The others have already expected them it seems, because Taichi opens the door immediately and Tomoya lets Tatsuya step through the door first. The moment he does so, the wolf’s body gets weirdly blurred, slight fog surrounding it, before Tatsuya is back in his human form.
“You are late-“ Taichi complains and throws a blanket over Tatsuya’s body. “We were worried.” He waves at Tomoya impatiently, signalling him to come in too. “It’s cold, Tomo!” he says to emphasize his wish.
There is hardly any way to object Taichi – like ever. Really. A little pain sometimes, though Tomoya doesn’t really mind. So he nods lazily, lowers his body and flies through the open door. He focuses, concentrates while he moves towards the ground. For a moment, the sight in front of his eyes gets blurred, then his body suddenly feels heavy and freaking cold. Interesting! The sudden change of body functions and needs. It’s really hardcore, he thinks, while he sneezes.
“Are you stupid!” Taichi huffs and throws a blanket over him. “It’s freezing and you are sitting on the floor.”
“You are like a mother hen, brother.” Tomoya yawns loudly and casually pats Taichi’s leg before he gets up. When Taichi looks at him in annoyance, he just grins.
“You are making it too easy to tease you, Tai.” Mabo says randomly and lights the fire in the huge oven. He smiles reassuringly and really, Taichi seems to cool down a bit.
“I’m just worried about my brothers.” Taichi explains and hands Tomoya a cup of tea. The latter merely nods.
“Yup,” he says. “S’kay.” When Taichi isn’t looking, he adds a little bit of rum to it. He needs to warm up, seriously.
~~~
“Whassup Jo?” Tomoya asks as he sits down next to his older brother. His tongue feels a little loose and heavy. He has probably added too much liqueur to his tea. But at least he feels warm now – mission accomplished. In some way at least.
“Nothing.” Shigeru pulls a little at his cigar – new brand he bought from his trip to the town last month – and leans back. “Just thinking we are screwed.”
“Why are you saying that?” Mabo asks in immediate concern and comes a little closer. He sits down next to Tomoya. When he offers Mabo a sip from his tea, the latter coughs in obvious disgust. He throws a little amused look at Tomoya, which he returns with a grin immediately.
“Our next mission from the base is to steal the crown jewels.” Shigeru explains randomly, coughing slightly as the smoke of his cigar seems to tickle his nose.
“From the princess?” Tatsuya asks as he walks into the cosy living room, now wearing a warm and fluffy cashmere-sweater. Light colours really suit him.
“Yeah.”
Tomoya nods. “Hm, I see.”
“Is that all you have to say?” Taichi asks in disbelief.
Tomoya shrugs. “A mission from the base is set in stone. We don’t discuss it, we just deliver. Easy as that, right?”
“Hm~” Tatsuya says, apparently not really convinced. But he doesn’t have anymore to say or points to throw into a discussion. Most likely, he knows that Tomoya is right. A mission from the base can’t be discussed. End of discussion. They just have to do it.
~~~
Shapeshifters are like guardians. That’s what Tatsuya tends to say in his calm and soothing way. He believes it and hence he can convince the others easily. It’s not a curse, it’s a gift. They are protecting the normal humans and the nature.
It’s not that simple though.
Every now and then, it happens that stars fall down from the sky and if they aren’t able to collect all the glittering pieces of the scattered stars, they might be found by humans, mistaken for jewels or beautiful stones.
Whenever a star drops on the human world, the base of the shapeshifters sends out information about the exact place where the star dropped to the shapeshifters who are scattered all over the world. Mostly, they live in uninhabited areas, not too close to a town but still in reach, not to attract too much attention. Tomoya and his brothers are living in a country far away, always covered in snow and ice even on sunny summer days.
The power of the stars is too strong and no human can handle it without losing his mind. If one is under the influence of the stardust too long, it might even push him into suicide.
This time, it’s the princess’ new diadem – her crown jewels – that are accidentally made out of two pieces of a star.
Shit happens, that’s what Tomoya used to say. And he says it again today. Normally, Taichi always frowns upon his cursing but this time, he only nods. Stealing the princess’ crown is not going to be a piece of cake.
~~~
“So, here is the plan.” Taichi spreads a map on the table in their home office which is a mix between a study and a library. It’s not as huge as their living room but there is an extra oven with wood burning on a low flame and spreading warmth through it. Also, Mabo was on a shopping spree a few weeks ago and bought new carpets and furniture because he didn’t want to live in such a plain, rustic place, as he said.
Taichi has basically ripped the documents and maps from Shigeru’s hands right now and takes over the command. None of them really minds. Taichi and Mabo are better suited to keep them organised than Shigeru. Though Tomoya thinks that Shigeru isn’t that bad – the others just don’t see his qualities or his ability to make his mind work right at the needed moment. But he doesn’t want to start a discussion now – it’s not the right time to argue and fight. Last time they did, Taichi turned into his beaver-form and hid somewhere in the woods for five full days and Shigeru switched into his sulking mode which wasn’t particularly useful either.
Well, at least Taichi and Mabo know what they do. Unlike Tomoya himself. He laughs a little at the thought of him trying to organise his bunch of crazy and chaotic brothers. No thanks. He is more into getting organised.
“Tomoya, we need you as the vanguard in your eagle form and check out the whole area.” Taichi explains. “Tatsuya, you will circle around us and be our guard. Mabo will transform into a bear. But stay a little behind as our last option in case we are trapped. Tatsuya will carry me and once we are at the town wall, I will take the path through the river and sneak inside.”
“Can you keep your breath for so long under water?” Tomoya wants to know.
“I’m a beaver.” Taichi explains and sounds a little too smug even to Tomoya’s ears. “I can do just anything.”
“Right,” Tomoya exchanges a glance with Tatsuya and chuckles. “That’s why it’s always Tatsu and I doing the hard work.”
Tomoya’s grin widens as Taichi just throws them a glare. But before they can even continue their bickering, Shigeru coughs a little. “What about me?” he asks. “What am I supposed to do.”
“Just don’t try to be in our way.” Mabo says non-diplomatically.
“Yeah, we need someone to keep a good eye on our surroundings.” Tatsuya adds most likely to keep the situation from escalating into a fight.
Sometimes, Tomoya feels a little sorry for Shigeru for not being a useful animal. A bunny is cute and fluffy and all, but neither dangerous, nor fast, nor equipped with a real important talent. Except for being cute.
~~~
Tomoya knocks with a cup of hot rum-tea against Shigeru’s head. The latter has been outside for an hour, chopping wood.
“Don’t catch a cold.” he says randomly while he actually isn’t concerned by that. But he feels like it’s something he should say.
Shigeru just laughs. “Yeah, sure.” He takes the offered cup and sits down on the snow. Tomoya grins and sits down next to him. It had snowed last week, providing them with an additional snow-cover, like they didn’t have enough already.
“Have you ever thought how it would be like to live at… you know… a tropical island?” Tomoya asks. He knows these places exist – other shapeshifters are guarding them. He has thought about how it would be to live there, but he isn’t sure if it’s really going to be better.
“Nah, too hot.” Shigeru yawns, taking a sip from his tea. He pulls his eyebrows up. “How much rum did you put in, lil’bro?”
“Not enough?” Tomoya jokes and pats the left side of his jacket. He has hidden a bottle with rum there, hidden from Taichi’s and Tatsuya’s eyes.
“Awesome, job.” Shigeru grins and lets Tomoya put more rum into his tea. “You truly are my brother.”
“And now?” Tomoya asks. “Nervous about tomorrow.”
“Not really.” Shigeru shrugs. “What about you?”
“Not sure.” he drops on his back, eyeing the starry night sky thoughtfully. “Why do they fall down sometimes?” he wants to know.
“No one can tell that.” Shigeru says and stretches his neck too now, looking at the sky as well. It’s full of stars now, sparkly, beautiful stars. But Tomoya can see how he frowns in worry.
“What is it?”
“They are soon going to drop again. A few of them at least – the sky is too covered with them.” Shigeru scratches his head. He is wearing a thick, leather hat. It looks so weird, really. Dude has zero fashion sense, which already says a lot considering that the only fashion they need out here are boots and thick clothes..
“So what?” Tomoya angles for his cigarettes in his pocket and lights one. When Shigeru looks at him, he offers one to him too.
Shigeru is silent for a while before he looks at the side a little. He points at the house with his chin, smiling slightly. “Look who is coming.”
“Probably Tatsuya.” Tomoya answers lazily. Not a surprise. The three of them are more the outside people type of people than Mabo and Taichi. And really, soon, he can feel how a shadow is hovering above him before Tatsuya sits down next to him.
“Aren’t you guys tired?” Tatsuya asks.
“Are you?”
“Not really,” Tatsuya smiles awkwardly, his lips are twitching. It’s so easy to tell that he is nervous. His job is always a more dangerous one. As a wolf, he is mostly distracting people, always on the edge of getting hunted. Now, he looks at the sky though, frowning. “So many stars,” he says, and it sounds a little upset.
“Shigeru said the same.” Tomoya yawns. “So what?”
“Doesn’t it worry you?” Tatsuya wants to know in surprise. “That they fall down on earth and give us so much trouble.”
“Not really.” Tomoya pulls at his cigarette. “If they fall down, we’ll find them. What’s the deal?”
“It’s dangerous?” Shigeru offers.
“It’s our job. At least we are good for something then.” Tomoya sits up now, stretching a bit. “Most people in this world have nothing to do. We have.” He points up at the sky, eyes widening a little as he concentrates. “Aren’t they actually really beautiful up there?”
“Hm~” Shigeru sounds wary but Tatsuya smiles a little. “Depends on the perspective.” the latter finally says.
Tomoya chuckles. “Exactly.”
Now it’s Shigeru who lies down on his back, looking up at the sky. “They are indeed sparkling. Full of light. Do you think it’s because it’s so cold and dark here that they are shining so much?”
“I’m not sure.” Tatsuya says. “We’ll know one day. At one point, we’ll have to change our location before we get suspicious.”
“Well,” Tomoya grins. “It’s still some time until then. But a new place means new things to see.”
“Hm,” Shigeru smiles warmly. “I guess you are right.”
~~~
There is something about the way the wind brushes through his wings and carries him along even faster that is weirdly addicting. Like a drug. Flying is like a freaking drug. He loves it so much that he always has a hard time to re-adapt to his human form.
You are getting carried away, he can hear Tatsuya’s voice in his head. It’s the only one he is linked to mentally right now, otherwise, it might get too confusing. He likes to have Tatsuya linked to him – out of all his brothers, he has probably learned the most about life from him, feeling as attached to him as to his oldest brother, Shigeru. Tatsuya is like his personal guardian and he loves him for being one.
Fuck, I know. he sighs inwardly. I need to focus.
It’s not like I can’t understand. Has to be exciting to feel the wind and the absence of gravity like that. Fly. A chuckle. But we need to work here.
I know, I know.
Tomoya turns his head a little. At the far left, he can see Tatsuya running through the forest so fast that his feet hardly seem to touch the ground. It looks a bit like he is flying too. On his back there is Taichi, hardly visible because he is so fast and is almost buried in Tatsuya’s fur not to get dropped down. Further behind them, there is Mabo in his bear form. His movements are heavier than Tatsuya’s and less gracile, but nevertheless, he is pretty fast. And he looks so awesomely intimidating. Cool dude. He is carrying Shigeru on his back. They always take him along so that he won’t feel left out. It’s mainly Tomoya’s demand to have him around – although he is the youngest one, the others listen to him in that case. Most likely because in their troupe, as the eagle, he is their ace.
Besides, who knows? Maybe they would need him! One never knows!
~~~
It’s so cold that even the river is frozen. But Mabo only needs one hit to break the ice at one point of the river leading into town.
Awesome, Taichi sounds relieved and a little nervous. Thanks. I’ll take that way to the other side.
What if the other side is completely frozen over too?
I don’t think so, Tatsuya’s voice suddenly appears. The latter stayed further away just out of security measures. The humans need the water. Besides, part of it normally moves through the canalisation too and even inside the castle.
Tomoya watches how Taichi dives into the water with a swift and elegant movement. He looks almost cute like that, with his wet fur and his little flexible nose. See you on the other side, Taichi says and twinkles towards Tomoya – most likely, he has heard his thoughts. Tomoya nods and lifts his body from the tree he is sitting on. He is pretty lucky, the humans of this area see him as a god-like creature. An eagle. Gracile, powerful. Bringing luck to them, protecting them.
No one even looks up for long as he flies over the little wealthy town. Some people do throw a glance at him and wave, but it’s nothing new to them to see wild birds in this country. Tomoya looks for a high place close to the castle, checking his surroundings a little. By now, he has opened his mind to all his brothers. He needs to be in contact with them. All of them. The mission is tricky after all.
Uh, he says when he throws a glance behind the thick walls of the palace garden.
What!? He can hear almost all four voices of his brothers in unison.
Tomoya chuckles. Princess is bathing.
Really? Shigeru asks in interest. Is she naked? Can you see anything?
Oh damn it, Shigeru. Don’t encourage him! Taichi huffs.
He is right. Why are you two always so reckless? Tatsuya scolds.
Mabo on the other hand laughs silently. Wish I could see it.
Let’s just go to our mission, Taichi begs. Please.
~~~
The princess is a beautiful young woman. Tomoya has always had a soft spot for her type of girl. While Taichi has already found a way through the canalisation into the castle, he takes a closer look at her.
He is sitting at the fence next to the hot spring now where she is bathing. She has thick, curly brown hair, not the cliché blonde one, though he likes that too. She is small and has quite some freckles on her nose. Her eyes are always awake and she has a beautiful smile.
He is so engulfed in the sight in front of him that he almost misses it. The diadem lying next to the bench, on top of the clothes. It’s here. The splinters of the stars!
Damn it, Tomoya? For real? Taichi calls out. Can you snag it?
There are guards, he mumbles. With arrows. Might be dangerous. But if I’m fast, I could-
No fucking way! Tatsuya huffs unusually forceful. I told you: nothing reckless!
It’s just a suggestion. Chill. It’s not like he would ever admit it, but Tatsuya’s words normally have the most effect on him and he mostly listens to him which is why he drops the thought of snagging the jewels almost immediately.
He shifts his head a little and through his sharp eagle-eyes, he can suddenly see Taichi squeezing his head through a pipe that leads into the garden. They exchange a swift look. By the way Taichi looks around, he for sure has seen the huge amount of guards too. And now?
We need a diversionary tactic, Taichi’s voice sounds bland, almost quiet. Not as energetic like usual. Tomoya almost wishes for it to sound sharp or angry. It’s better than the way it’s twitching with worry.
It’s silent in his head. He can only hear the panting of the others. We could retreat, Mabo suggests all of a sudden and Tomoya almost wants to agree – it sounds so alluring. Diversionary tactic sounds dangerous and they haven’t done that before.
We can’t. Tatsuya says silently.
Why not? Taichi mumbles. I mean, it’s only one human’s life in danger. And we don’t literally have to get all the splinters. It’s not that dramatic if we miss one.
There is silence around them again. Something inside Tomoya’s stomach tugs a little. He doesn’t know that feeling but it has to be close to worry and fear. He can escape and get in and out so easily, while for his brothers, things are more difficult. Losing them, he could not bear that. It’s better to fail their job.
We can’t leave. It’s Shigeru and he sounds unusually firm. It’s not only a job. It’s the utmost reason of our existence. We can’t deny our destiny.
It’s rare for him to sound that sure and convincing. And awake. But somehow, Tomoya feels relaxed almost immediately. Shigeru is here too, his oldest brother, the one who taught him how to survive in the cold outside together with Tatsuya, the one who always had an encouraging word and never lost patience. If he is here, it will be alright. What should we do? Tomoya asks. He is easily able to oppose Taichi, but he would never oppose Shigeru.
Get me inside. Shigeru says, and if Tomoya closes his eyes, he can almost see how he smiles.
Tatsuya and Mabo will make a fuss outside. If it’s outside of the town, you can escape easier. If you get hurt, damn it, don’t play the heroes, just escape. Don’t forget to wipe away your blood or take a way through the water if you do get hurt. I trust you to know your limits!
Got it, Mabo agrees. I’ll take the left side. Tatsuya the right. I could make some fuss in the sheep shelter.
And I will simply howl. Should be enough to attract their attention.
Good, Shigeru breaths in a little. How does it look inside? Is there a chance for you Taichi to get into the town through the river?
Yeah, there are parts that are not frozen.
Good. You will be the one distracting them. You are not dangerous looking. Just steal some fruits and break some pots, make some chaos and then disappear as fast as possible. Don’t play they hero either. You are easier to catch than the others, so just escape soon enough. I’ll give you all a sign when to start. Just get yourself prepared.
Taichi’s head suddenly disappears through the pipe again. Tomoya stays at his position and still listens carefully. It sounds good, he thinks, not a bad plan at all. Having the bigger ones outside will give them enough room to escape and not be trapped easily. Taichi on the other hand was smaller and could easily escape through the river. And I? he asks.
You need to get me inside, Tomo. Come back, I’ll meet you at the back of the town wall.
The moment he hears these words, he is already taking off again, throwing one last glance at the bathing princess. She looks up too and for a moment, it seems like their eyes meet.
~~~
It’s good that you are here, Shigeru. Tomoya lands right next to his older brother. He is hardly visible in the snow, the advantage of being a snow rabbit.
It’s you who always believes in me and who is responsible for me being here. Shigeru says and his eyes smile thankfully. Thank you.
Tomoya feels a little flustered. To brush it off, he moves his wings a bit. Should we get going? he asks and reaches out his claws towards Shigeru.
The latter only nods and Tomoya reaches out and grabs him immediately. He tries to be careful not to hurt him with his sharp claws. It feels weird to carry another animal though, heavier, but he is surprisingly strong in this form and adapts to it soon. He goes for a different route now, not directly over the people’s heads but silently over the roofs of the houses right next to the town wall, using the shadow there until he reaches the castle.
He approaches the garden from the other side now, not where the princess is bathing. In a quiet corner, he lets Shigeru down again. I’m moving back to my previous spot, he says.
Shigeru nods. Meet you there.
~~~
Tomoya is back at his viewpoint immediately. The princess is not in the water anymore but outside. She has wrapped a blanket around her body and kneels on the ground. Her skin is a little too white, he thinks. Most likely because it’s so cold here and hardly meets any sun. He almost wishes to be able to take her into a warmer region where she can be free and happy.
She looks up again, like she senses his presence. There is a graceful smile on her lips. And her so-awake but recently always sad looking eyes, light up a bit. He feels almost bad that they have to take her diadem away, to steal from her.
It’s when he hears a silent cough that he realises Shigeru is close too. The next moment, he can already hear his voice. We are starting the mission. Are you all ready?
Yes.
Okay, Shigeru takes a deep breath. 3, 2, 1. START!
For a moment, it’s deadly quiet. Then it almost happens all at once. There is a dark howl from outside the city and the panicked bleat of the sheep. Also, he can hear how some pots and porcelain plates get crushed and the people in the town squeal.
The princess looks up in surprise. She turns her head a little. “Go take a look!” she tells her guards. They disappear immediately after her command. Shigeru nods in relief and already hops towards the bench with the diadem.
Tomoya looks around a little. It’s only when he sees a guy with a spear approaching that he realizes they have missed one of the guards. Of course they won’t all leave the princess alone. “Princess, your jewels. Watch out! A wild animal!”
Tomoya squeaks loudly, hoping to distract them but to his surprise it’s not him who stops them but the young girl suddenly hurrying in between. “Are you crazy?” she calls out. “It’s just a cute little bunny. I’m safe here. You can leave.”
Tomoya calms down almost immediately, watching how she kneels down in front of Shigeru. “So cute,” she smiles. “Such a beautiful, white rabbit. Maybe you will bring me some luck.”
He can see how Shigeru tilts his head, almost looking a little guilty. Luck? Hah!
~~~
It’s a cry that’s so loud that it almost rips apart the air. Both Shigeru’s and Tomoya’s heads snap up. And it’s only when the princess doesn’t react that Tomoya realizes it’s been in their heads only.
That’s Tatsuya! Tomoya breaths out. Fear filling him all of a sudden. His dear brother and one of his best friends at once. He got hurt. So hurt that he can’t control his thoughts anymore. They are swirling around in panic – and the pain Tatsuya feels fills all of them all of a sudden. Tomoya’s heart feels heavy and it hurts so much like never before.
They hit him. He is heavily wounded. Mabo’s voice, it sounds strained and shaky. He has already started to flee.
FUCK IT! Shigeru recovers fast. With Tatsuya regaining some distance, his thoughts leave them too. Mabo, run! Go away from the humans. Run as far away as you can! We’ll handle it. Taichi you too – you need to look for Tatsuya.
“What happened?” the princess suddenly looks at Shigeru thoughtfully. “You seem so nervous all of a sudden, little bunny.”
The next thing they hear is the cheering from the crowd outside the town. “We almost got the wolf. He won’t make it far.”
“Ah,” she says as Shigeru retreats carefully. Then he disappears all of a sudden in the white of the snow.
Leave, Tomo, it’s too dangerous. We’ll meet you at home.
~~~
It’s silent all of a sudden. He can’t hear the voices of his brothers anymore. He is about to retreat too when he suddenly sees her standing up and turning around. She is looking at him. He is hundred percent sure that she is directly looking into his soul.
Screw it, he thinks. If it’s a trap, if it’s his biggest mistake in his life, he can’t tell yet but he has to try. He takes off and lands on the bench right in front of her.
She sits down in front of him, staring at him for a while. “My name is Ai.” she says and after a while: “You have the eyes of a human,” she says all of a sudden.
Tomoya smiles. When she reaches out his hand, he doesn’t move away. Her fingers feel weirdly warm and soft against his feathers. “What do you want from me?” she asks carefully.
Tomoya shifts a little and points at the diadem. She reaches out her hand and takes it. For a moment, Tomoya feels how his heart almost stops beating. What now? What is she going to do? Hide it, take it and run, or let the guards hunt him or- To his surprise she doesn’t do anything like that. Instead, she hands it to him. “Then take it. I never liked it anyway. It feels so heavy and depressive. Since I got it as a present, I’m feeling tired and sick all the time.”
She has a good feeling it seems. Heavy and depressive, the splinters of the star. He takes it between his claws and is about to set off again. “Come and visit me sometimes.” she calls after him. “Next time, tell me your name, please. Come again.”
He probably will.
~~~
The sun shines all of a sudden and the snow is sparkling and shining. Still, Tomoya sees Shigeru immediately, rushing over the plain field. He is not really fast as a bunny, but faster than he has expected him to be. Tomoya lets his body drop down and angles for his brother, carrying him along.
Thanks, Shigeru sounds exhausted. For a moment, Tomoya can almost hear his mind working as he sees the diadem. You got it!?
Yes.
He drops him at their home. Both Taichi and Mabo are already waiting there, exhausted from their fight.
“I haven’t found him.” Taichi says, already in his human form. “My power left me before I could.” He looks tired and sad, not like usually. “Masahiro is too tired too.” There are tears glimmering in his eyes. Tomoya hates to see his strong brothers like that. He flies towards him, sitting down on his shoulder and rubbing his head against his cheek. “Thanks.” Taichi smiles.
“Tomo-“ Shigeru has turned into his human form as well. “When you find him, stay there. You are soon going to run out of strength too. Please be careful. If you feel you can’t go further, don’t. We can’t lose you too- It’s-“
Tomoya just screeches as an answer. He can’t say more. He can’t promise Shigeru not to continue looking for Tatsuya even when he feels exhausted.
“Come back safe.” Taichi smiles. “Together with Tatsuya. Call us when you find him.”
~~~
It takes a while but he has the advantage of being in the air and having sharp eyes. There is a trail of blood in the snow here and there before it disappears again. Wise guy. Tatsuya has always been the smart one. He has probably taken the path through the river to diffuse his trace.
It’s when he comes closer to a cave that he can suddenly hear him again. He is panting. Tomoya settles down next to him immediately, switching into his human form to be able to treat his wounds. He is bleeding heavily but still stable. With a careful movement, he takes his head in his lap.
Found him. He manages to tell his brothers before exhaustion settles in. “I found you.”

Tomoya-
Tomoya sends him a reassuring nod. We are almost back home, Tatsuya!

“You are like a mother hen, brother.” Tomoya yawns loudly and casually pats Taichi’s leg before he gets up. When Taichi looks at him in annoyance, he just grins.
“You are making it too easy to tease you, Tai.” Mabo says randomly and lights the fire in the huge oven. He smiles reassuringly and really, Taichi seems to cool down a bit.
“I’m just worried about my brothers.” Taichi explains and hands Tomoya a cup of tea. The latter merely nods.
“Yup,” he says. “S’kay.” When Taichi isn’t looking, he adds a little bit of rum to it. He needs to warm up, seriously.
~~~
“Whassup Jo?” Tomoya asks as he sits down next to his older brother. His tongue feels a little loose and heavy. He has probably added too much liqueur to his tea. But at least he feels warm now – mission accomplished. In some way at least.
“Nothing.” Shigeru pulls a little at his cigar – new brand he bought from his trip to the town last month – and leans back. “Just thinking we are screwed.”
“Why are you saying that?” Mabo asks in immediate concern and comes a little closer. He sits down next to Tomoya. When he offers Mabo a sip from his tea, the latter coughs in obvious disgust. He throws a little amused look at Tomoya, which he returns with a grin immediately.
“Our next mission from the base is to steal the crown jewels.” Shigeru explains randomly, coughing slightly as the smoke of his cigar seems to tickle his nose.
“From the princess?” Tatsuya asks as he walks into the cosy living room, now wearing a warm and fluffy cashmere-sweater. Light colours really suit him.
“Yeah.”
Tomoya nods. “Hm, I see.”
“Is that all you have to say?” Taichi asks in disbelief.
Tomoya shrugs. “A mission from the base is set in stone. We don’t discuss it, we just deliver. Easy as that, right?”
“Hm~” Tatsuya says, apparently not really convinced. But he doesn’t have anymore to say or points to throw into a discussion. Most likely, he knows that Tomoya is right. A mission from the base can’t be discussed. End of discussion. They just have to do it.
~~~
Shapeshifters are like guardians. That’s what Tatsuya tends to say in his calm and soothing way. He believes it and hence he can convince the others easily. It’s not a curse, it’s a gift. They are protecting the normal humans and the nature.
It’s not that simple though.
Every now and then, it happens that stars fall down from the sky and if they aren’t able to collect all the glittering pieces of the scattered stars, they might be found by humans, mistaken for jewels or beautiful stones.
Whenever a star drops on the human world, the base of the shapeshifters sends out information about the exact place where the star dropped to the shapeshifters who are scattered all over the world. Mostly, they live in uninhabited areas, not too close to a town but still in reach, not to attract too much attention. Tomoya and his brothers are living in a country far away, always covered in snow and ice even on sunny summer days.
The power of the stars is too strong and no human can handle it without losing his mind. If one is under the influence of the stardust too long, it might even push him into suicide.
This time, it’s the princess’ new diadem – her crown jewels – that are accidentally made out of two pieces of a star.
Shit happens, that’s what Tomoya used to say. And he says it again today. Normally, Taichi always frowns upon his cursing but this time, he only nods. Stealing the princess’ crown is not going to be a piece of cake.
~~~
“So, here is the plan.” Taichi spreads a map on the table in their home office which is a mix between a study and a library. It’s not as huge as their living room but there is an extra oven with wood burning on a low flame and spreading warmth through it. Also, Mabo was on a shopping spree a few weeks ago and bought new carpets and furniture because he didn’t want to live in such a plain, rustic place, as he said.
Taichi has basically ripped the documents and maps from Shigeru’s hands right now and takes over the command. None of them really minds. Taichi and Mabo are better suited to keep them organised than Shigeru. Though Tomoya thinks that Shigeru isn’t that bad – the others just don’t see his qualities or his ability to make his mind work right at the needed moment. But he doesn’t want to start a discussion now – it’s not the right time to argue and fight. Last time they did, Taichi turned into his beaver-form and hid somewhere in the woods for five full days and Shigeru switched into his sulking mode which wasn’t particularly useful either.
Well, at least Taichi and Mabo know what they do. Unlike Tomoya himself. He laughs a little at the thought of him trying to organise his bunch of crazy and chaotic brothers. No thanks. He is more into getting organised.
“Tomoya, we need you as the vanguard in your eagle form and check out the whole area.” Taichi explains. “Tatsuya, you will circle around us and be our guard. Mabo will transform into a bear. But stay a little behind as our last option in case we are trapped. Tatsuya will carry me and once we are at the town wall, I will take the path through the river and sneak inside.”
“Can you keep your breath for so long under water?” Tomoya wants to know.
“I’m a beaver.” Taichi explains and sounds a little too smug even to Tomoya’s ears. “I can do just anything.”
“Right,” Tomoya exchanges a glance with Tatsuya and chuckles. “That’s why it’s always Tatsu and I doing the hard work.”
Tomoya’s grin widens as Taichi just throws them a glare. But before they can even continue their bickering, Shigeru coughs a little. “What about me?” he asks. “What am I supposed to do.”
“Just don’t try to be in our way.” Mabo says non-diplomatically.
“Yeah, we need someone to keep a good eye on our surroundings.” Tatsuya adds most likely to keep the situation from escalating into a fight.
Sometimes, Tomoya feels a little sorry for Shigeru for not being a useful animal. A bunny is cute and fluffy and all, but neither dangerous, nor fast, nor equipped with a real important talent. Except for being cute.
~~~
Tomoya knocks with a cup of hot rum-tea against Shigeru’s head. The latter has been outside for an hour, chopping wood.
“Don’t catch a cold.” he says randomly while he actually isn’t concerned by that. But he feels like it’s something he should say.
Shigeru just laughs. “Yeah, sure.” He takes the offered cup and sits down on the snow. Tomoya grins and sits down next to him. It had snowed last week, providing them with an additional snow-cover, like they didn’t have enough already.
“Have you ever thought how it would be like to live at… you know… a tropical island?” Tomoya asks. He knows these places exist – other shapeshifters are guarding them. He has thought about how it would be to live there, but he isn’t sure if it’s really going to be better.
“Nah, too hot.” Shigeru yawns, taking a sip from his tea. He pulls his eyebrows up. “How much rum did you put in, lil’bro?”
“Not enough?” Tomoya jokes and pats the left side of his jacket. He has hidden a bottle with rum there, hidden from Taichi’s and Tatsuya’s eyes.
“Awesome, job.” Shigeru grins and lets Tomoya put more rum into his tea. “You truly are my brother.”
“And now?” Tomoya asks. “Nervous about tomorrow.”
“Not really.” Shigeru shrugs. “What about you?”
“Not sure.” he drops on his back, eyeing the starry night sky thoughtfully. “Why do they fall down sometimes?” he wants to know.
“No one can tell that.” Shigeru says and stretches his neck too now, looking at the sky as well. It’s full of stars now, sparkly, beautiful stars. But Tomoya can see how he frowns in worry.
“What is it?”
“They are soon going to drop again. A few of them at least – the sky is too covered with them.” Shigeru scratches his head. He is wearing a thick, leather hat. It looks so weird, really. Dude has zero fashion sense, which already says a lot considering that the only fashion they need out here are boots and thick clothes..
“So what?” Tomoya angles for his cigarettes in his pocket and lights one. When Shigeru looks at him, he offers one to him too.
Shigeru is silent for a while before he looks at the side a little. He points at the house with his chin, smiling slightly. “Look who is coming.”
“Probably Tatsuya.” Tomoya answers lazily. Not a surprise. The three of them are more the outside people type of people than Mabo and Taichi. And really, soon, he can feel how a shadow is hovering above him before Tatsuya sits down next to him.
“Aren’t you guys tired?” Tatsuya asks.
“Are you?”
“Not really,” Tatsuya smiles awkwardly, his lips are twitching. It’s so easy to tell that he is nervous. His job is always a more dangerous one. As a wolf, he is mostly distracting people, always on the edge of getting hunted. Now, he looks at the sky though, frowning. “So many stars,” he says, and it sounds a little upset.
“Shigeru said the same.” Tomoya yawns. “So what?”
“Doesn’t it worry you?” Tatsuya wants to know in surprise. “That they fall down on earth and give us so much trouble.”
“Not really.” Tomoya pulls at his cigarette. “If they fall down, we’ll find them. What’s the deal?”
“It’s dangerous?” Shigeru offers.
“It’s our job. At least we are good for something then.” Tomoya sits up now, stretching a bit. “Most people in this world have nothing to do. We have.” He points up at the sky, eyes widening a little as he concentrates. “Aren’t they actually really beautiful up there?”
“Hm~” Shigeru sounds wary but Tatsuya smiles a little. “Depends on the perspective.” the latter finally says.
Tomoya chuckles. “Exactly.”
Now it’s Shigeru who lies down on his back, looking up at the sky. “They are indeed sparkling. Full of light. Do you think it’s because it’s so cold and dark here that they are shining so much?”
“I’m not sure.” Tatsuya says. “We’ll know one day. At one point, we’ll have to change our location before we get suspicious.”
“Well,” Tomoya grins. “It’s still some time until then. But a new place means new things to see.”
“Hm,” Shigeru smiles warmly. “I guess you are right.”
~~~
There is something about the way the wind brushes through his wings and carries him along even faster that is weirdly addicting. Like a drug. Flying is like a freaking drug. He loves it so much that he always has a hard time to re-adapt to his human form.
You are getting carried away, he can hear Tatsuya’s voice in his head. It’s the only one he is linked to mentally right now, otherwise, it might get too confusing. He likes to have Tatsuya linked to him – out of all his brothers, he has probably learned the most about life from him, feeling as attached to him as to his oldest brother, Shigeru. Tatsuya is like his personal guardian and he loves him for being one.
Fuck, I know. he sighs inwardly. I need to focus.
It’s not like I can’t understand. Has to be exciting to feel the wind and the absence of gravity like that. Fly. A chuckle. But we need to work here.
I know, I know.
Tomoya turns his head a little. At the far left, he can see Tatsuya running through the forest so fast that his feet hardly seem to touch the ground. It looks a bit like he is flying too. On his back there is Taichi, hardly visible because he is so fast and is almost buried in Tatsuya’s fur not to get dropped down. Further behind them, there is Mabo in his bear form. His movements are heavier than Tatsuya’s and less gracile, but nevertheless, he is pretty fast. And he looks so awesomely intimidating. Cool dude. He is carrying Shigeru on his back. They always take him along so that he won’t feel left out. It’s mainly Tomoya’s demand to have him around – although he is the youngest one, the others listen to him in that case. Most likely because in their troupe, as the eagle, he is their ace.
Besides, who knows? Maybe they would need him! One never knows!
~~~
It’s so cold that even the river is frozen. But Mabo only needs one hit to break the ice at one point of the river leading into town.
Awesome, Taichi sounds relieved and a little nervous. Thanks. I’ll take that way to the other side.
What if the other side is completely frozen over too?
I don’t think so, Tatsuya’s voice suddenly appears. The latter stayed further away just out of security measures. The humans need the water. Besides, part of it normally moves through the canalisation too and even inside the castle.
Tomoya watches how Taichi dives into the water with a swift and elegant movement. He looks almost cute like that, with his wet fur and his little flexible nose. See you on the other side, Taichi says and twinkles towards Tomoya – most likely, he has heard his thoughts. Tomoya nods and lifts his body from the tree he is sitting on. He is pretty lucky, the humans of this area see him as a god-like creature. An eagle. Gracile, powerful. Bringing luck to them, protecting them.
No one even looks up for long as he flies over the little wealthy town. Some people do throw a glance at him and wave, but it’s nothing new to them to see wild birds in this country. Tomoya looks for a high place close to the castle, checking his surroundings a little. By now, he has opened his mind to all his brothers. He needs to be in contact with them. All of them. The mission is tricky after all.
Uh, he says when he throws a glance behind the thick walls of the palace garden.
What!? He can hear almost all four voices of his brothers in unison.
Tomoya chuckles. Princess is bathing.
Really? Shigeru asks in interest. Is she naked? Can you see anything?
Oh damn it, Shigeru. Don’t encourage him! Taichi huffs.
He is right. Why are you two always so reckless? Tatsuya scolds.
Mabo on the other hand laughs silently. Wish I could see it.
Let’s just go to our mission, Taichi begs. Please.
~~~
The princess is a beautiful young woman. Tomoya has always had a soft spot for her type of girl. While Taichi has already found a way through the canalisation into the castle, he takes a closer look at her.
He is sitting at the fence next to the hot spring now where she is bathing. She has thick, curly brown hair, not the cliché blonde one, though he likes that too. She is small and has quite some freckles on her nose. Her eyes are always awake and she has a beautiful smile.
He is so engulfed in the sight in front of him that he almost misses it. The diadem lying next to the bench, on top of the clothes. It’s here. The splinters of the stars!
Damn it, Tomoya? For real? Taichi calls out. Can you snag it?
There are guards, he mumbles. With arrows. Might be dangerous. But if I’m fast, I could-
No fucking way! Tatsuya huffs unusually forceful. I told you: nothing reckless!
It’s just a suggestion. Chill. It’s not like he would ever admit it, but Tatsuya’s words normally have the most effect on him and he mostly listens to him which is why he drops the thought of snagging the jewels almost immediately.
He shifts his head a little and through his sharp eagle-eyes, he can suddenly see Taichi squeezing his head through a pipe that leads into the garden. They exchange a swift look. By the way Taichi looks around, he for sure has seen the huge amount of guards too. And now?
We need a diversionary tactic, Taichi’s voice sounds bland, almost quiet. Not as energetic like usual. Tomoya almost wishes for it to sound sharp or angry. It’s better than the way it’s twitching with worry.
It’s silent in his head. He can only hear the panting of the others. We could retreat, Mabo suggests all of a sudden and Tomoya almost wants to agree – it sounds so alluring. Diversionary tactic sounds dangerous and they haven’t done that before.
We can’t. Tatsuya says silently.
Why not? Taichi mumbles. I mean, it’s only one human’s life in danger. And we don’t literally have to get all the splinters. It’s not that dramatic if we miss one.
There is silence around them again. Something inside Tomoya’s stomach tugs a little. He doesn’t know that feeling but it has to be close to worry and fear. He can escape and get in and out so easily, while for his brothers, things are more difficult. Losing them, he could not bear that. It’s better to fail their job.
We can’t leave. It’s Shigeru and he sounds unusually firm. It’s not only a job. It’s the utmost reason of our existence. We can’t deny our destiny.
It’s rare for him to sound that sure and convincing. And awake. But somehow, Tomoya feels relaxed almost immediately. Shigeru is here too, his oldest brother, the one who taught him how to survive in the cold outside together with Tatsuya, the one who always had an encouraging word and never lost patience. If he is here, it will be alright. What should we do? Tomoya asks. He is easily able to oppose Taichi, but he would never oppose Shigeru.
Get me inside. Shigeru says, and if Tomoya closes his eyes, he can almost see how he smiles.
Tatsuya and Mabo will make a fuss outside. If it’s outside of the town, you can escape easier. If you get hurt, damn it, don’t play the heroes, just escape. Don’t forget to wipe away your blood or take a way through the water if you do get hurt. I trust you to know your limits!
Got it, Mabo agrees. I’ll take the left side. Tatsuya the right. I could make some fuss in the sheep shelter.
And I will simply howl. Should be enough to attract their attention.
Good, Shigeru breaths in a little. How does it look inside? Is there a chance for you Taichi to get into the town through the river?
Yeah, there are parts that are not frozen.
Good. You will be the one distracting them. You are not dangerous looking. Just steal some fruits and break some pots, make some chaos and then disappear as fast as possible. Don’t play they hero either. You are easier to catch than the others, so just escape soon enough. I’ll give you all a sign when to start. Just get yourself prepared.
Taichi’s head suddenly disappears through the pipe again. Tomoya stays at his position and still listens carefully. It sounds good, he thinks, not a bad plan at all. Having the bigger ones outside will give them enough room to escape and not be trapped easily. Taichi on the other hand was smaller and could easily escape through the river. And I? he asks.
You need to get me inside, Tomo. Come back, I’ll meet you at the back of the town wall.
The moment he hears these words, he is already taking off again, throwing one last glance at the bathing princess. She looks up too and for a moment, it seems like their eyes meet.
~~~
It’s good that you are here, Shigeru. Tomoya lands right next to his older brother. He is hardly visible in the snow, the advantage of being a snow rabbit.
It’s you who always believes in me and who is responsible for me being here. Shigeru says and his eyes smile thankfully. Thank you.
Tomoya feels a little flustered. To brush it off, he moves his wings a bit. Should we get going? he asks and reaches out his claws towards Shigeru.
The latter only nods and Tomoya reaches out and grabs him immediately. He tries to be careful not to hurt him with his sharp claws. It feels weird to carry another animal though, heavier, but he is surprisingly strong in this form and adapts to it soon. He goes for a different route now, not directly over the people’s heads but silently over the roofs of the houses right next to the town wall, using the shadow there until he reaches the castle.
He approaches the garden from the other side now, not where the princess is bathing. In a quiet corner, he lets Shigeru down again. I’m moving back to my previous spot, he says.
Shigeru nods. Meet you there.
~~~
Tomoya is back at his viewpoint immediately. The princess is not in the water anymore but outside. She has wrapped a blanket around her body and kneels on the ground. Her skin is a little too white, he thinks. Most likely because it’s so cold here and hardly meets any sun. He almost wishes to be able to take her into a warmer region where she can be free and happy.
She looks up again, like she senses his presence. There is a graceful smile on her lips. And her so-awake but recently always sad looking eyes, light up a bit. He feels almost bad that they have to take her diadem away, to steal from her.
It’s when he hears a silent cough that he realises Shigeru is close too. The next moment, he can already hear his voice. We are starting the mission. Are you all ready?
Yes.
Okay, Shigeru takes a deep breath. 3, 2, 1. START!
For a moment, it’s deadly quiet. Then it almost happens all at once. There is a dark howl from outside the city and the panicked bleat of the sheep. Also, he can hear how some pots and porcelain plates get crushed and the people in the town squeal.
The princess looks up in surprise. She turns her head a little. “Go take a look!” she tells her guards. They disappear immediately after her command. Shigeru nods in relief and already hops towards the bench with the diadem.
Tomoya looks around a little. It’s only when he sees a guy with a spear approaching that he realizes they have missed one of the guards. Of course they won’t all leave the princess alone. “Princess, your jewels. Watch out! A wild animal!”
Tomoya squeaks loudly, hoping to distract them but to his surprise it’s not him who stops them but the young girl suddenly hurrying in between. “Are you crazy?” she calls out. “It’s just a cute little bunny. I’m safe here. You can leave.”
Tomoya calms down almost immediately, watching how she kneels down in front of Shigeru. “So cute,” she smiles. “Such a beautiful, white rabbit. Maybe you will bring me some luck.”
He can see how Shigeru tilts his head, almost looking a little guilty. Luck? Hah!
~~~
It’s a cry that’s so loud that it almost rips apart the air. Both Shigeru’s and Tomoya’s heads snap up. And it’s only when the princess doesn’t react that Tomoya realizes it’s been in their heads only.
That’s Tatsuya! Tomoya breaths out. Fear filling him all of a sudden. His dear brother and one of his best friends at once. He got hurt. So hurt that he can’t control his thoughts anymore. They are swirling around in panic – and the pain Tatsuya feels fills all of them all of a sudden. Tomoya’s heart feels heavy and it hurts so much like never before.
They hit him. He is heavily wounded. Mabo’s voice, it sounds strained and shaky. He has already started to flee.
FUCK IT! Shigeru recovers fast. With Tatsuya regaining some distance, his thoughts leave them too. Mabo, run! Go away from the humans. Run as far away as you can! We’ll handle it. Taichi you too – you need to look for Tatsuya.
“What happened?” the princess suddenly looks at Shigeru thoughtfully. “You seem so nervous all of a sudden, little bunny.”
The next thing they hear is the cheering from the crowd outside the town. “We almost got the wolf. He won’t make it far.”
“Ah,” she says as Shigeru retreats carefully. Then he disappears all of a sudden in the white of the snow.
Leave, Tomo, it’s too dangerous. We’ll meet you at home.
~~~
It’s silent all of a sudden. He can’t hear the voices of his brothers anymore. He is about to retreat too when he suddenly sees her standing up and turning around. She is looking at him. He is hundred percent sure that she is directly looking into his soul.
Screw it, he thinks. If it’s a trap, if it’s his biggest mistake in his life, he can’t tell yet but he has to try. He takes off and lands on the bench right in front of her.
She sits down in front of him, staring at him for a while. “My name is Ai.” she says and after a while: “You have the eyes of a human,” she says all of a sudden.
Tomoya smiles. When she reaches out his hand, he doesn’t move away. Her fingers feel weirdly warm and soft against his feathers. “What do you want from me?” she asks carefully.
Tomoya shifts a little and points at the diadem. She reaches out her hand and takes it. For a moment, Tomoya feels how his heart almost stops beating. What now? What is she going to do? Hide it, take it and run, or let the guards hunt him or- To his surprise she doesn’t do anything like that. Instead, she hands it to him. “Then take it. I never liked it anyway. It feels so heavy and depressive. Since I got it as a present, I’m feeling tired and sick all the time.”
She has a good feeling it seems. Heavy and depressive, the splinters of the star. He takes it between his claws and is about to set off again. “Come and visit me sometimes.” she calls after him. “Next time, tell me your name, please. Come again.”
He probably will.
~~~
The sun shines all of a sudden and the snow is sparkling and shining. Still, Tomoya sees Shigeru immediately, rushing over the plain field. He is not really fast as a bunny, but faster than he has expected him to be. Tomoya lets his body drop down and angles for his brother, carrying him along.
Thanks, Shigeru sounds exhausted. For a moment, Tomoya can almost hear his mind working as he sees the diadem. You got it!?
Yes.
He drops him at their home. Both Taichi and Mabo are already waiting there, exhausted from their fight.
“I haven’t found him.” Taichi says, already in his human form. “My power left me before I could.” He looks tired and sad, not like usually. “Masahiro is too tired too.” There are tears glimmering in his eyes. Tomoya hates to see his strong brothers like that. He flies towards him, sitting down on his shoulder and rubbing his head against his cheek. “Thanks.” Taichi smiles.
“Tomo-“ Shigeru has turned into his human form as well. “When you find him, stay there. You are soon going to run out of strength too. Please be careful. If you feel you can’t go further, don’t. We can’t lose you too- It’s-“
Tomoya just screeches as an answer. He can’t say more. He can’t promise Shigeru not to continue looking for Tatsuya even when he feels exhausted.
“Come back safe.” Taichi smiles. “Together with Tatsuya. Call us when you find him.”
~~~
It takes a while but he has the advantage of being in the air and having sharp eyes. There is a trail of blood in the snow here and there before it disappears again. Wise guy. Tatsuya has always been the smart one. He has probably taken the path through the river to diffuse his trace.
It’s when he comes closer to a cave that he can suddenly hear him again. He is panting. Tomoya settles down next to him immediately, switching into his human form to be able to treat his wounds. He is bleeding heavily but still stable. With a careful movement, he takes his head in his lap.
Found him. He manages to tell his brothers before exhaustion settles in. “I found you.”
The idea was so cool. And their animal forms were just cool, poor Shigeru though *lol* But in the end he was the cute one who helped at least a little bit ^^
It would be interesting how it'll go on between the princess and Nagase *lol* And what Taichi would say :P
I am glad that Nagase found Tatsuya in the end, poor Gussan, but he'll be alirght now.
And they got the jewelery ^^
Thanks for sharing this, I totally enjoyed reading it <3
i wanna give a longer review but id have to reread the whole fic for it and id end up crying again
but one day i'd say something more constructive
i'm just so impressed by the universe and how simply yet concisely you managed to describe it--and how even though tokio are shapeshifters they're still tokio, and they all know what path they're going to take together, and no matter what they wouldn't be able to do it if it weren't the five of them together
i'm so fucked up
i love this so much i'm so fucked up
i also love bird tomo holy shit i had an au where he was a phoenix who was cursed to be in human form and he'd always forget that he wasn't a bird any more so he'd jump from buildings and then burst into flames because he died and then be reincarnated again HAHAHAno subject
*LOL* Believe me, I had such a hard time not to make this a pairing! (Yamase, definitely Oo) But my recipient for the exchange didn't want to receive a pairing, so I immediately wrote them all as brothers ( you know... otherwise I can't guarantee :D)
Woah, cool plot! Is your story still around somewhere? ^^no subject
JUST!!!! I can't even. Tatsu all tired and beaten up and finally it feels like he's having a little piece of home instead of fear l;ksdfl;hsl;dg /throws laptop into the ocean
Why are you so good at giving the feelings.
I WROTE THIS LIKE YEEEEEEEAAAARS AGO so it's pretty bad and it was also when I just started learning English so it was even worse. =))) Tomo was a phoenix and Mabo was this ice-elemental creature and Tatsu was half-reaper and half-human and... I forget what the rest were, whoops. :| But Tatsu used to accidentally kill people all the time and he accidentally kills Tomo once only for Tomo to come back to life and SO YOU KNOW THEY BECOME CLOSE BECAUSE TATSU DOESN'T HAVE TO BE AFRAID WITH HIM.....................and i'm shipping trash
