Title: Family matters ~ Chapter 13
Pairing: Jun, Masaki, Sho, Satoshi, Kazu (there are going to be additional side-characters though. No OCs.) I'm trying to give each of the five their well-deserves spot-light <3
Rating: PG
Multi-chapter
Genre: family!AU in which Arashi are brothers :-) slice of life, a little drama (and I'm trying to add some light-hearted, funny moments to it too)
Summary: Since they were little they were always close to each other. And when unfortunate events force them to live together without their parents, it's only natural that they try to make the best out of it.
Satoshi stares at the blank sheet in front of him. It’s not coming, nothing. Zero. Nada. Rien. Not one tiny inspiration. Not even a piece of a piece of a piece of an inspiration. Fuck it. Screw this painting, his exhibition, screw those brutal gangsters, this motorbike gang, any gang. Screw everything.
In this state he basically can’t do anything. Just stay at his atelier and stare at the empty picture in front of him. He feels tired, but can’t sleep. Is hungry, but doesn’t know what the hell to eat. Not even Masaki’s perfect food tastes good. Hell, he doesn’t even want to go home because it’s so depressing there, because he can’t reassure Jun or Masaki that everything will be alright. He is such a fail, seriously.
It’s-
When his phone vibrates, he picks it up without even thinking properly. “Hm,” he mumbles.
“Satoshi?”
It’s Sho. He knows it immediately. He also knows that by the way his voice sounds exasperated, he calls from the hospital. For a moment the world stops to move, it’s deathly silent. “Yes?”
“He is stable.”
“What?”
The world starts moving again.
Sho’s chuckle sounds almost hysterical, probably because he is so relieved. “He is stable. They already brought him to a normal room. He even woke up shortly in intensive care, but probably won’t remember it. He is under heavy meds, but once their impacts subside, he will wake up.”
When Sho hangs up again, Satoshi stares at the blank picture in front of him. It takes him a while to realize that he is crying.
~~~
It really is like the world is moving again, carefully first, but he can suddenly feel every round the world takes. He wonders if he has ever lived and sensed that intensely.
When he locks his atelier, he basically bumps into Kame. “Kazuya-kun?”
“I thought about bringing you some coffee.” Kame smiles carefully, and blushes at the same time. “Well, I know you don’t want anyone around and stuff like that, but the last time I got a glimpse of you, you looked horrible. And I don’t want you to loose anymore weight. But if you want me to leave, well, I could…”
Satoshi doesn’t mind that they are right at the street, he just has to hug this guy. Simply for being there.
“I assume you heard good news?” Kame asks, careful hope in his eyes.
Satoshi smiles. “He is stable again.”
“Ah, such a relief! I’m so happy!” Kame grins happily and jumps forward towards Satoshi, throwing an arm around his shoulders. Then he forces one of his coffee cups into Satoshi’s hands. “Extra caramel latte,” he says when Satoshi blinks at him. And- “Are you going to the hospital?”
“Yes.” Satoshi smiles, squeezing Kazu’s hand. “Want to walk with me? Or are you busy?”
“Not at all,” Kame says, and it’s so obviously a lie that Satoshi has to smile.
“You have a class don’t you?”
“I can skip it for one day,” Kame argues.
Satoshi chuckles. “You know, Kazuya-kun, soon I have to scold one of my younger brothers for skipping school regularly. Wouldn’t it make me hypocritical if instead I’m fine with my boyfriend skipping a class?”
Kame blinks, then he laughs. He looks around for a short moment, probably checking if someone was around, then he pulls Satoshi to a darker corner, kissing him passionately. He has the softest lips ever, and he is so freaking straight-forward and passionate that it takes Satoshi’s breath away. Then however Kame pulls away and grins. “For an update of this, call me whenever you are free and emotionally ready. Otherwise we can also watch the next Walking Dead season together and just cuddle. Just…eh…” He blushes. “Call, okay?”
Satoshi smiles. “I will.”
When Kame turns around, rushing towards the bus station, Satoshi sighs and smiles at the same time. He should have, maybe, gone for an older lover with less energy. He is never going to say it out loud though, he would never hear the end of this from possibly all his brothers. He can almost hear them calling him Grandpa. And they would be right.
He has no time to think about that though, because he just needs to hurry, go to the hospital as fast as possible. He is not that much of a sportive person but today he just runs, the whole way, 20 minutes, without one single pause. When he finally reaches the hospital, he doesn’t even realize that he is sweating and panting heavily.
Kazu lies in room 22, second floor. He is still asleep when Satoshi opens the door. For a moment he has to halt and take in the picture in front of him. It’s just... Kazu looks drained and pale, more like a shadow of his bratty younger brother. “Fuck it, you stupid kid,” Satoshi huffs, while he takes a chair to sit down next to Kazu. He takes his hand into his. “How can anyone be that stupid?”
“Well.” Sho approaches him from the other side of the room. Satoshi hasn’t even realized that he is here too. “That’s the question of the day.”
“I swear.” Satoshi thankfully takes the glass of water and the tissue Sho offers him. “I’m going to ground him forever.”
“What? Forever?” Sho grins. “How do you want to control that?”
“Well, maybe not forever,” Satoshi clarifies. “But as long as I’m alive! I will lock him into his room and hide the key!”
Sho smiles. “Please make a proper testimony for us then so that we can find the key afterwards.” His gaze is all soft now. “But seriously Satoshi, what do you wanna do? Do you want to bury the key to his room so that he just has to stay at home forever? Well, it’s obvious that you are the creative mind within us, so I’m sure you’ll find a way.”
Satoshi nods. “I know, I might be over-reacting, but… you know…”
“Yes, I do.” Sho sits down at the second free chair. “And I don’t think you are overreacting.”
“I’m so relieved that I feel like I can conquer the world. At the same time I’m so pissed that I feel like smashing it again after I conquered it. Is that how you feel when you have one of your temper tantrums?”
Sho grins. “Now you finally understood the complicated emotions that turn me into the very interesting person I am.”
Satoshi rolls his eyes. Only Sho can say something like that, so eloquent and so stuck up, and still pull it off… somehow. “It’s just.” Satoshi frowns. “Difficult to put into words.”
Sho is all earnest again. “Don’t worry. I know exactly how you feel. You know what? Let’s talk about this with Masaki, so that we know what we can tell Kazu-chan when he wakes up, okay? We need a plan this time, and we need to discuss it properly.”
“You are right.” Satoshi nods. “Let’s do that tonight.”
“And for now, we should probably pay Karina-san a visit and tell her in person that Kazu is alright. She helped us a lot after all. And it’s only thanks to the fact that she remembered the guys’ tattoos that the police found all of them.”
True words. Satoshi nods. “What if Kazu wakes up meanwhile? Someone should definitely be here. We can’t leave him alone…”
Before Sho can even react to his words the door flies open, and Jun storms in. “Is it true that he is stable?” He throws his bag into the corner of the room and takes Kazu’s hand into his, touching it carefully, like he can’t even wrap his mind around his brother being safe yet. “I can’t believe it. I just got your message, Sho, and came here immediately. You two can go now, wherever you want to go, in case you have work. I’m staying!”
Sho blinks in surprise. “Don’t you have school, Jun?”
“Who the hell cares for that when Kazu is going to wake up soon? Like I’m not going to be here when he wakes up!” When Sho frowns and opens his mouth to say something, Jun raises his hands in defence. “That came out wrong, sorry. But I talked to Nagase-sensei. It’s okay. My attendance record is basically flawless. He said I could come here today, as long as I’m back again tomorrow.”
“Is that true? Your teacher said you could come?”
“I promise, it’s true.” He nods his head, like he wants to underline his words. He is most likely saying the truth, but then with nowadays happenings one can never be sure.
Sho sighs deeply. “Bless the day when none of you two manages to manipulate us into something.”
Jun eyes light up, he smiles one of his dazzling smiles. “Thank you!”
Sho chuckles, but when they leave Kazu’s room, he lets out a sigh. “I’m even worse than Masaki. I just can’t say no recently.”
Satoshi laughs slightly. “Sho, it’s okay, because this is important to Jun. I don’t think you need to worry that you went all marshmallow.” He grins. “You out of all. On the marshmallow ranking I think you are still gracing the very bad 3rd place.”
Sho pouts. “Why again does it sound like an insult coming from you? Jeez, here I’m trying to be more understanding, and it’s still not enough?”
“Actually.” Satoshi pats his shoulder, smiling warmly. “I think you are doing way better than I or Masaki.”
“But it’s school,” Sho whines. “I never give in when it’s about school.”
“Well, school or Kazu?” Satoshi shrugs as they hurry downstairs and to the parking place. “This is not just anything. For Jun nothing is more important than Kazu.”
Sho nods, obviously convinced and relieved. “You are right,” he says. “By no means we could take the moment from Jun away when Kazu wakes up. He would never forgive us.”
True words spoken again. Sho has apparently really gotten some very intense insight during his tequila night – and decided to keep it and live up to it. It’s unbelievable how much he managed to change.
~~~
Karina’s cooking isn’t even half as special as Masaki’s. She obviously likes it simpler and goes for traditional, easier tastes, but she is good in that aspect. Very good actually. Today she has prepared simple udon with chicken and vegetables.
Out of the corner of his eyes, Satoshi can see how Sho tries to eat the soup as neatly as possible. They are never having ramen or udon anywhere else but at home, because both Jun and Kazu are normally completely grossed out by Satoshi’s and Masaki’s, and also Sho’s eating manners, so that they oppose every ramen store.
“Are you not eating anything?” Satoshi asks, feeling slightly embarrassed that they dropped by around lunch time so that apparently she felt the need to cook something.
“I will later.” She smiles. “With my brother. He hates eating alone. He can be such a child, really.”
Sho chuckles. “I kind of get what you mean.”
“They have us in the palm of their hands.” Karina nods but smiles in a way that just shows how happy she actually is.
“That’s because they are cute.” Sho grins. “When you are a lot older, your younger siblings are just so adorable.”
Satoshi agrees, silently, he doesn’t say it out loud though because it almost seems like these two are sharing a moment, which he doesn’t quite understand. Sho seems to be full-heartedly happy that everything went so well. Satoshi is too, but at the same time he is also hundred percent angry.
“I knew he would make it,” Karina says all of a sudden when she sits down next to them with a cup of jasmine tea. “He is a strong kid.”
“Not strong enough to stay away from such a mess though,” Sho says and hits the truth with all his might. “I’m also blaming myself though. I mean, he and Jun were obviously not over what happened. Kazu told us once in the heat of the moment that Jun doesn’t like driving the car, at all, that he has panic attacks. And here I was, thinking he just whole-heartedly enjoys taking the bicycle every day or going by foot. How very naïve of me.”
“Of us,” Satoshi interrupts him. “Don’t you dare to take the blame alone.”
“Just be glad that you found out early enough.” She offers Satoshi a cup of tea as well which he takes with a polite nod. “You have not lost that much time. Besides that the new doctor in hospital is really good. He is not only a neurologist but also a psychiatrist – he is the head of the department for traumata. Maybe he could help?”
Sho and Satoshi exchange a look. “Matsuda-sensei,” Satoshi muses. “Kazu needs to visit him regularly now, after everything that happened. Youth court decided that. He has no other choice but to obey. But Jun? Jun is going to kill us when we tell him to see Matsuda regularly for psychological support.”
Karina opens her mouth to say something, but Sho is faster. “It’s probably our weakest point that we are always so scared of our younger brothers’ reactions. Like, we know we should do this or that, or tell them to do this or that, but we don’t, because they might get mad at us.”
“So,” Satoshi snickers. “You are really ready to take it up with Jun’s wrath?”
“I don’t want to,” Sho whines. “Why do I have to deal with Jun?”
“Why? Do you want to swap him with Kazu? I’d rather like to handle Jun now to be honest.”
Sho frowns. “No,” he finally says. “I’m handling Jun, you handle Kazu. It’s better that way. It’s always been like that and it better stays like that.”
It is true. It’s always been like that from the days they were kids. It’s always been Sho looking after Jun, and Satoshi after Kazu. And Masaki watching out that all four of them wouldn’t trip too much. It’s true, all of it, but he can’t let it slip without some tiny teasing. “You-“ Satoshi points with his chopsticks at Sho and grins. “-are just afraid that I or Masaki might become the one Jun consults when there is a problem.”
“Damn right,” Sho says surprisingly honest. “I’m going to stay the number 1 brother, even when he hates on me. Don’t pretend like you would be happy if I was the one yelling at Kazu. That’s your job! Besides, Jun does not consult with me when he has a problem… It’s rather like: I am the one who gets on his nerves when there is one.”
“Listening to you two,” Karina muses. “I’m almost glad that Ryo is my only brother.”
“I just can’t believe that my younger brother was part of a gang. And driving a motorbike. And skipping school. It’s a lot to take.” Satoshi can’t help the bitter tone in his voice. “Sho is right, we haven’t been watching properly. Or rather… I was feeling suspicious but didn’t do anything about it. I’m so stupid.”
“You are not,” Sho huffs. “It’s one thing to skip school, but joining a gang? None of us would have thought of it.”
“You’ll need to get over it,” Karina says casually. “You should talk about it, you are even allowed to get angry, but at one point you have to accept it, move on and let Kazu start anew.” She takes the empty bowls from Satoshi and Sho, and chuckles. “Anyone dessert?”
Satoshi and Sho exchange a glance. The talk seems to be over, at least from her side. She doesn’t waste too many words it seems, which isn’t all that bad. Still, Satoshi frowns, he might need a bit of a time to grasp everything she said.
A/N: I think Kazu will have quite some tough times coming up... He needs to face Satoshi. Ugh. (And how do you think Jun will react once Kazu is awake?)
Haha, Sho really got marshmallow, right? :-)

Date: 2016-03-26 09:19 pm (UTC)Yes, I guess Kazu won't have it too easy once he wakes up. Satoshi isn't happy. And the others aren't either. ^^

Date: 2016-03-21 07:13 am (UTC)It's cute! Sho really needs a girlfriend. Or a boyfriend. Whichever fits better.
Kazu will be fine. Well, the family has yet to bring this problem to a close, but at least they will be fine. That's what matters the most.
And Jun being all worried over his closest brother, it's just so cute XD
I don't get enough of my Masaki dose though XD
Thank you for the update~

But I agree, Sho just might need someone at his side <3
You are right, Kazu is fine... as in he'll be in fine again. Everything else might just be a matter of time :-)
