Title: Rain
Pairing: Sakumoto
Rating: PG-13
Genre: romance
Summary: Jun has always loved the rain. Then Sho came into his life...
Notes: Happy birthday to my beloved Jun, my ichiban in JE :D This is a little, totally innocent, rather fluffy story.
For many, many years rain has fascinated Jun. As a child he loved to hear the sound of the raindrops against his window, was scared and weirdly fascinated by the lightening, liked the smell of the wet ground, the feeling of the wet raindrops on his skin, was amazed by how the water splashed into all directions when he jumped into a puddle, liked to make mud cakes and listened to scary stories while cuddling against his pillow and listening to the rain.
Then however he fell in love with Sho, and with their beginning relationship, rain became his most dreaded weather. It almost ruined them several times already… it almost ruined their relationship, just like frost could ruin blossoming flowers. He started to hate the rain. Even now, 10 years after they got together and solved many issues, he can’t stand the sound of the raindrops against a window or the feel of the wet on his skin. It’s cold, wet, scary and depressing.
Sho chuckles slightly. “It’s going to rain for two weeks, are you planning on staying moody for that long?” He sits down on the sofa, robbing closer to Jun. Jun tries to shove him away, but to his annoyance Sho just grins and wraps his arms around his waist tighter.
“I’m working,” Jun points out.
Sho nods earnestly. “How about we work out together?”
Jun has to smile at that silly way of seduction. He is about to put his laptop to the side and let Sho pull him into his arms when a thunder breaks the sky apart and another aggressive wave of rain hammers against their window.
Jun pulls back. “I can’t,” he says.
Sho sighs. “You know, sometimes I find your little rain-antipathy cute. Weird, but also adorable. Just, Jun-san, two weeks,” he tries to reason. “You can’t ignore me for two weeks.”
Jun blushes. “I’m not ignoring you.”
“What are you ignoring then?” Sho wants to know.
“The rain,” Jun says automatically, and Sho lets out a chuckle.
Whenever Sho asks him why he hates the rain so much, he can’t give him an answer. Well, he could, but he is sure it’s not the one Sho wants to hear. For years Sho has accepted the fact that Jun gets always sulky and moody when it’s raining, like it’s a little quirky characteristic of him. Then however the inevitable happens… and Jun’s mother invites them for a late Sunday brunch.
“Still raining,” she sighs when they drop by and she provides them with warm tea immediately. She smiles at Jun. “Well, at least you are happy, dear, aren’t you?”
Sho’s eyes snap wide-open for a second, then he bends forward, eyebrows furrowed in concentration. “I’m sorry Matsumoto-san,” he says, before Jun can even recover fast enough to intervene and diffuse the talk. He is doomed, oh my god, he is doomed… “I didn’t hear what you said. Jun-san is happy because…”
“…he loves the rain,” she chirps happily. “During rainy season he was always my personal sunshine. He liked to jump through the raindrops and hear stories during rainy nights. He would sit at the window and just watch the rain, refusing to go to bed. When he was a little kid he believed fairies send him the rain to lure him to sleep.”
Sho’s mouth drops open for a second. He throws Jun a glance that makes Jun shift back into his chair nervously. When his mother hurries to get them something to eat from the kitchen, Jun is up his feet immediately to help her. Before he can leave the room though, Sho grabs his wrist to hold him back.
“You know, you have to explain this to me,” Sho says with emphasis. Jun knows that tone of his, it’s the one he uses to lecture someone. His tutoring-mode, and there is no escaping it. Jun decides to ignore him for now and come up with a strategy meanwhile. He pulls his hand free and hurries to help his mother.
~~~
Sho waits until they are home and the door is closed safely behind them, and they can just let it out. “Okay,” he says earnestly. “I’ll listen, but I want to know the truth now.”
Jun tries to reason. “I used to love the rain when I was a child.”
“Seriously?” Sho raises his eyebrows. “Your mother told me all kind of stories about you and the rain and your little adventures together. She even showed me some of the pictures you painted and the stories you wrote for school.”
When did his mother do that? Jun sighs. Probably when he received a call from his manager and had to talk to him for a while. “Yes, I loved the rain,” he admits. “But I don’t love it anymore. Since a while already.”
“I thought you were traumatized,” Sho argues. “Like something bad happened in your childhood while it was raining. You do realize that you freak out completely when it rains?”
“I don’t!” Jun huffs. “Don’t make me sound like a maniac.”
“It’s raining since a week,” Sho continues, ignoring Jun’s previous comment. “You haven’t let me touch you since then. It’s always like that. I’m not allowed to have sex with you, or even hug you when it rains. Actually you hardly let me kiss you. You expect me to believe that it’s just a plain and normal change of preferences? I’m not stupid, Jun-san.”
“I never said you were,” Jun tries to intervene. “Why can’t you accept that I simply don’t like the rain anymore?”
“Because I can’t. I know you. And I know that something happened that turned oyu into a bundle of strained nerves when it’s raining,” Sho argues. He takes a step closer to Jun. “Listen,” he says, voice softer now. “I’m just worried. I didn’t mean to jump at you for something so silly like that. And I don’t want to argue with you over the rain.”
“Well, if we want to argue, better now than next week when there’ll be nice weather again,” Jun says instinctively before he can stop himself. His words make Sho blink in surprise. Damn it, why couldn’t he just stay quiet?
“What do you mean?” Sho says, mere astonishment in his voice. “I don’t get it. What the hell is wrong with you when it’s raining?”
Damn it. Jun frowns deeply. “It’s a sign,” he blurts out all of a sudden, making Sho blink. “Everytime something bad happened between us, it was raining! It’s a bad sign.”
“What?” Sho’s eyes widen. “Wait a moment, you hate the rain because of me?”
“No!” Jun shakes his head. “I hate the rain because it means something bad will happen between us. And I don’t like that. I’m scared of whatever we are about to do then.”
“Jun…” Sho starts carefully.
“I know you find it silly, but I can’t help it,” Jun huffs. “I just expect the worst when it’s raining.”
Sho smiles warily and takes Jun’s hand into his. It feels warm. He chuckles slightly. “Jun, you can’t be serious? I mean… I’m sure not all bad things happened when it was raining.”
“They did.” Jun pulls his hand away and crosses his arms in front of his body. “The day I confessed to you and you dumped me – rain. Our first major fight – rain. A week in which we didn’t talk to each other – rain. Our second huge fight – rain. The day you forgot our anniversary – rain. The day you thought I was cheating on you – rain and taifun. Our biggest fight ever – rain. When you got lost in the forest for a TV-program and I was worried like crazy – rain. The day we broke up and decided to take a break from each other – rain.” He pauses. “You see a pattern?”
“Jun,” Sho begins earnestly. “Yes, bad things happened when it was raining. But they also did when the sun shone. Just that there is more sun than rain, hence you rather remember it more when it’s raining and-“
“Don’t turn it into something logical,” Jun huffs.
Sho is silent for a long while, obviously letting Jun’s words sink in. Then he lets out a deep sigh. “Coffee,” he says all of a sudden. And- “Sofa?”
Jun blinks. “What?”
“Wait for me on the sofa,” Sho tells him more coherently now. “I’m fetching us some coffee.” Before Jun can turn away and leave the room, Sho grabs him and tugs him back. He hugs him all of a sudden, surging forward to kiss him. It’s a surprise attack and Jun gets basically swept away by it. He doesn’t know how long they kissed, with him leaning against the wall, and Sho’s hand at the small of his back, pressing their bodies against each other. His lips feel a bit swollen when they draw apart.
“You think I’m silly, don’t you?” Jun asks nervously all of a sudden.
Sho smiles a bit. “Not all that silly, but maybe a bit? But I like a good challenge, and this here is a new one.”
“Hm.” Jun blinks. “What do you mean?”
Sho smirks. “I’m going to make you love the rain again.”
~~~
“Awesome, it’s raining the whole weekend,” Sho chirps in a way only Aiba would normally do and parks the car in front of the huge cottage. It belongs to Sho’s family and he has arranged for them to have it all on their own for the whole weekend.
Raining is an understatement actually because the sky lets its entire wrath down on them. Jun sighs in annoyance and unloads their two bags. He wants to get this over with and go back to hiding behind his work again until the weather changes. Sho however clasps his shoulders in highest motivation and hugs him from behind. “Say you love me,” he whispers into Jun’s ear.
Jun blushes. What’s that about now? “Of course I do,” he stutters.
“Say you give me a chance here,” Sho continues and bites into Jun’s earlobe.
“I wouldn’t be here otherwise,” Jun grumbles.
“I told you, I like a good challenge,” Sho smirks and pulls away from Jun. “And we are going to spend the weekend here. Filled with lots of wonderful activities we can do in the rain.”
A thunder makes the ground shiver and Jun looks at Sho sceptically, but his good mood seems to be unshakeable. “There is nothing more romantic than a thunderstorm,” Sho chuckles in a silly way and pulls Jun along.
“The cottage is actually really beautiful,” Jun admits. It really is. Located next to a sea, in the middle of the nature, with a huge veranda and a luxurious interior. It’s like a little paradise. “We should come here when the weather is better and we can swim in the sea and…”
“Ah!” Sho raises his hand. “We are not talking about good weather here. Rule number 1.”
“There are rules?” Jun wants to know.
Sho grins. “Yes. And mentioning good weather is forbidden.”
Jun can’t help but smile a bit at all that silliness.
They wait for the really strong rain to subside a bit and eat warm ramen meanwhile. Sho has preordered all of their food from their favourite restaurant so that Jun wouldn’t need to cook. When they are finished, he catches their rain jackets, hats and two umbrellas.
“Seriously?” Jun asks in surprise.
“Dead-seriously.” Sho nods.
Fine. Jun sighs. He has promised to give Sho an honest chance and seeing his lover so motivated he doesn’t want to disappoint him by not even trying. Hence he puts on his jacket and his hat, and takes the umbrella Sho offers him. It’s violet. Sho’s is red. Jun can’t help a grin. Okay, this is kind of funny.
It’s not really cold outside, only slightly windy. It’s early summer and the air is warm. Sho takes his hand. When Jun blinks in surprise, he blushes. “I… we are alone here,” he stutters.
Jun smiles and nods, his fingers wrapped around Sho’s hand. True. They are alone here. Sho chuckles and throws his umbrella to the side, eyeing the sky and holding his face into the rain. He looks so adorable and so much like a teenager again that Jun just has to follow him. He puts the umbrella next to Sho’s, takes off his jacket and hat, and grins impishly. “Let’s run.”
Sho laughs. “Yes!”
They chase each other through the rain down the road to the sea and stop there for a moment, both of them panting heavily. They walk back slower this time, and Sho makes some silly dance moves. “Is that how Riida dances Rain?” he jokes.
Jun giggles while he watches Sho’s fail attempts. “Almost.”
“I would rather like to see you do Shake it though,” Sho points out, eyes lightening up when Jun indeed makes the first dance moves of the song. Then he jumps into a huge puddle so that the water splashes to all sides. Okay, he missed that.
He turns around, walking backwards to their house while Sho follows him. The closer they get to their destination the closer Sho comes towards him, until he is right in front of him. “You are so beautiful,” Sho admits silently, and all the dorkiness is suddenly washed away from his face.
He pulls Jun into a kiss. It’s almost like it’s their first kiss again. Sho tastes like rain. Jun realizes he has never kissed someone in the rain before. This is a first. It is their first kiss in the rain. He smiles against Sho’s lips. “I hope you didn’t plan on making love to me in the rain?” he jokes.
“For a second I did,” Sho chuckles. “But I want to go inside now, take a warm bath with you, and then spend at least the next four hours in bed.”
“Four?” Jun chuckles and pecks Sho’s nose. “How much stamina do you think you have, old man?”
“Don’t underestimate me,” Sho jokes. “You’ve not let me touch you since it started raining. I’ve saved lots and lots and lots of stamina for you~”
“Hm, is that so?”
“Yes, I intend to start in the whirlpool, drink some hot chocolate in between. Then do it in the living room while I stop you from making cute window decoration. Then we’ll move to the kitchen… kitchen table~ and-“
Jun giggles, feeling like an overly excited teenager again. “You intend to have sex in every room here?”
“Totally.” Sho nods earnestly, twinkling a bit. “At last we’ll move out to the veranda and cuddle and watch how the water drops down on the sea.”
“Are you training me like Pavlov’s dog?” Jun grins. “Are you conditioning me into getting hot for you whenever it starts raining?”
“If that’s a side-effect of our weekend here, I won’t complain,” Sho jokes. He takes Jun’s hand into his, squeezing it. “Jun,” he says softly. “I know it wasn’t always easy between us when we grew up. It’s not the rain’s fault that we fought often and even broke up once. Didn’t we actually change a lot? We are even living together, aren’t we? I want you to cherish all of our moments together, and even when we fight sometimes and it might rain when we do, I want you not to be afraid of something you liked so much once. Let’s create a lot wonderful memories with each other. No matter if it rains or not. What do you say?”
Jun wraps his arms around Sho’s waist and pulls him closer. “Yes,” he says, his voice shaking slightly. Something inside his stomach flutters in happiness by how kind Sho is towards him. And by how hard he tries. “Thank you, Sho.” He nuzzles his nose into his hair. “Let’s work together and create lots of good memories.”
